Brakes and Traction Control: Testing and Inspection
Brakes, Testing
General Information
Wheels are driven by the test stand.
For the test, place shift lever in neutral for vehicles with manual transmission or place selector lever in driving position "N" for vehicles with automatic transmission.
Observe all safety precautions and operating instructions from manufacturer test stand during test.
FWD Vehicles
1 - Axle Dynamometer, Brake Test
We recommend a brake test stand with RPM regulation for the rollers and a maximum test speed of 6 Km/h.
Brakes may engage if these specifications are not met (EDL regulation).
If this occurs, switch engine and ignition off for test. To obtain sufficient vacuum for the brake test, let engine run briefly.
AWD Vehicles, Haldex Clutch
1 - Axle Test Stand, AWD, Brake Test
The wheels on one axle are driven in opposite directions by the test stand so that the other axle is not driven.
We recommend a brake test stand with RPM regulation for the rollers and a maximum test speed of 6 Km/h.
Brakes may engage if these specifications are not met (EDL regulation).
If this occurs, switch engine and ignition off for the test. To obtain sufficient vacuum for the brake test, first let engine run briefly.
If there are no All Wheel Drive (AWD) test stands available, the test can also be performed on a conventional test stand.
- Drive vehicle forward onto rollers.
- Switch engine off and wait 2 seconds.
- Carry out front axle brake test.
- Start engine and let run for approx. 5 seconds until sufficient vacuum pressure has built up in brake booster.
- Drive vehicle forward until rear wheels are on rollers.
- Switch engine off and wait 2 seconds.
- Carry out rear axle brake test.
Engine must not be running and ignition must not be switched on during test, otherwise the Haldex clutch will drive the rear axle.
