Seat Belt Systems: Service and Repair
Disposal Of Pyrotechnic Belt Tensioners
CAUTION:
- It is dangerous to scrap an unignited gas generator.
- The belt tensioner unit gas generator must be made unusable before scrapping. This is important because the gas generator is a pyrotechnic device that can cause injury if activated improperly (for instance when using a cutting torch).
- All seat belts replaced (e.g. following an accident not involving igniting of belt tensioner) are to be triggered prior to removal.
- This does not apply to seat belts with quality defects (sticking, failure to retract) which are required for factory analysis.
- Heed transportation regulations for explosion-hazard substances.
Procedure for triggering front pyrotechnic belt tensioners:
Remove seat belt with belt tensioning unit
- Remove side trim
- Remove B-pillar brace
- Remove outer seat belt anchorage point
- Use J-44210 Deployment Fixture and refer to the Airbag Pyrotechnic Deployment Device Instruction Booklet for proper deployment procedure.
- Ensure adequate vehicle ventilation afterwards.
- Belts can be disposed of with commercial refuse after removal.
- Always wash hands after handling belt tensioners which have been activated.
- Observe safety precautions for handling pyrotechnic belt tensioners.
- The procedure for triggering rear pyrotechnic belt tensioners is the same as for front belt tensioners.
- Observe regulations governing transportation of explosive substances.
