Rear Suspension
Wheel bearings, removing and installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383A
^ Foot pump with high pressure hose V.A.G 1389A/1
If there is a hand pump V.A.G 1389/1 available in the dealership it can be converted to a foot-operated pump.
^ Wheel bearing tool V.A.G 1459B
^ Hollow piston cylinder HKZ-15 with thrust piece E-0-204-T (hydraulic)
^ Pull rod E-0-217+218
^ Special nut E-8-214
^ Thrust piece E-5
^ Centering piece with clamp E-76-2
^ Supplementary set for VAG 1459B V.A.G 1383A
^ Thrust sleeve E-44
^ Support E-40

^ First remove drive axle.
- Remove wheel.
- Remove securing bolts - 1 - from brake caliper and remove brake caliper.
- Remove phillips-head screw for brake disc and remove brake disc.
- Remove ABS wheel speed sensor from trailing arm housing.
Pressing out wheel hub
- Insert thrust piece 1 as shown in illustration.

- Position thrust piece so that it makes full contact with bolt heads - 2 -.
- Attach centering piece with clamp E-76-2.

2 - Centering piece with clamp E-76-2
- Attach support - 1 -, hollow piston cylinder - 2 - with pull rod - 3 - and special nut - 4 -.

5 - High pressure hose with quick-release coupling
6 - Thrust piece E-39
- Build up pressure with foot-operated pump.
- Check that all tools are correctly centered.
Note: Place engine/transmission jack V.A.G 13831A underneath (danger of accident from parts dropping out when wheel hub is pulled out).
- Press wheel hub out of wheel bearing by pumping.
Pressing out wheel bearing
- Remove circlip.
- Position thrust piece - 1 - on rear side of wheel bearing.
- Apply hollow piston cylinder - 2 - with pull rod - 3 - and special nut - 4 -.
- Build up pressure with foot-operated pump.
- Check that all tools are correctly centered.
- Press out wheel bearing by pumping.

- Pull inner bearing race off wheel hub.
Pressing in wheel bearing
- Position wheel bearing on wheel bearing housing.
- Place thrust piece - 1 - on rear side of wheel bearing housing.
- Attach hollow piston cylinder - 2 - with pull rod - 3 -, special nut - 4 - and thrust piece - 5 -.
- Build up pressure with foot-operated pump.
- Check that all tools are correctly centered.
- Press in wheel bearing by pumping.

- Install circlip.
Pressing in wheel hub
- Position wheel hub on wheel bearing.
- Attach centering piece with clamp E-76-2.
- Place thrust piece - 1 - on rear side of wheel bearing housing.
- Attach hollow piston cylinder - 2 - with pull rod - 3 -, special nut - 4 - and thrust piece - 5 -.
- Build up pressure with foot-operated pump.
- Check that all tools are correctly centered.
- Press in wheel hub by operating foot pump.
The shoulder - arrow - on thrust piece E-5 must face toward special nut - 4 -.

Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse sequence.
Tightening torques:
Inner joint of drive axle to final drive flange
12-point nut on wheel hub
Use new 12-point nut.
