Drive Belt: Service and Repair



Ribbed belt, removing and installing

Note:
^ The following illustration shows the belt drive on vehicles without air conditioning.
^ Before removing the ribbed belt, mark the direction of rotation using chalk or a felt marker pen. If the belt rotates in the wrong direction when it is reinstalled, this can cause breakage. Ensure that the belt is properly seated in the pulleys when installing.
^ Install air conditioning compressor Fig. 3.





1 - 25 Nm

2 - Tensioning element for ribbed belt

^ Turn with open-end wrench to loosen ribbed belt.

3 - Vibration damper

^ With pulley for ribbed belt
^ Can only be installed in one position

4 - 25 Nm

5 - Generator

^ To facilitate positioning of Generator on bracket, knock back threaded bushings for retaining bolts slightly.

6 - 25 Nm

7 - Bracket

^ Illustration shows version for vehicles without air conditioning

8 - 45 Nm

9 - 25 Nm

10 - Banjo bolt, 30 Nm

11 - Sealing ring

^ Replace

12 - Pressure line

13 - Sealing ring

14 - Power steering pump

^ To facilitate positioning of pump on bracket, knock back threaded bushings for retaining bolts slightly.

15 - Pulley

^ For power steering pump

16 - 25 Nm

18 - Ribbed belt

^ Position of ribbed belt on vehicles without air conditioning Go to Fig. 1
^ Position of ribbed belt on vehicles with air conditioning Go to Fig. 2
^ A double ribbed belt is installed on engines with an A/C compressor
^ Mark direction of rotation before removing.
^ Check for wear.
^ Do not kink

Note:
Engines with an air conditioning compressor have a double ribbed belt installed.

- To facilitate positioning of A/C compressor, knock back threaded bushings -13- for retaining bolts -A- slightly in direction indicated (arrow).
- Tighten bolts to 45 Nm.

Removing ribbed belt

Note:
Before removing the ribbed belt, mark the direction of rotation using chalk or a felt marker pen. If the belt rotates in the wrong direction when it is reinstalled, this can cause breakage. Ensure that the belt is properly seated in the pulleys when installing.





- To loosen ribbed belt turn tensioning element in direction of arrow.
- Remove ribbed belt.





The tensioning element can be locked in position with a suitable punch (4.5 mm diameter, approx. 55 mm long). Connecting rod support 3090 can also be used.

Installing ribbed belt

Note:
Before installing the ribbed belt ensure that all accessories (Generator, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump) are properly secured.

- Install ribbed belt.





- Loosen tensioning element for ribbed belt. Pull out punch or connecting rod support 3090 (arrows).
- Start engine and check that belt runs properly.

Note:
Engines with an air conditioning compressor have a double ribbed belt installed.
