These explanations refer only to this component group: Automatic Transmission 09G. There is no claim of general validity.
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
Gear oil for automatic transmission
ATF level
"Filling level" of ATF in the transmission. To measure the ATF level, please note the information given in these repair procedures.
Brakes
These stop rotating parts in the transmission. Unlike the clutches, the brakes are supported at the transmission housing.
Torque converter
Transfers the engine torque to the automatic transmission and acts as a hydraulic starting clutch. The torque converter also contains the lock-up clutch.
On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
Capability of the control module to recognize malfunctions and to react to and store these malfunctions. Also, the capability of the control module to record measured values and make them visible in the measured value block.
Performing On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
Connection of a scan tool to read the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory.
Connection of the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 tool and performing the guided fault finding.
Clutches
These connect the individual gears together with the brakes.
Cable guide
Routing of electrical wiring and components in the vehicle.
Shift lock solenoid -N110-
Is located in the shift mechanism near the selector lever. Prevents (accidental) actuation of the selector lever out of the "P" and "N" positions, provided the brake is not depressed.
Solenoid valves
Opening and closing the oil channels to the clutches and brakes.
Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) switch -F125-
Is screwed onto the selector shaft toward the top at the transmission housing. It is an electrical switch and passes on the gears set via the selector lever to the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Must be set correctly.
Parking lock
With a stationary vehicle and the selector lever in the "P" position, the parking lock gear is mechanically locked and secures the vehicle against (accidental) rolling away.
Planetary gearbox
Is the mechanical component of the automatic transmission and is switched via clutches and brakes without power flow interruption.
Valve body
Is located at the bottom of the transmission and is enclosed by the ATF pan. Its valves regulate the hydraulic pressure and distribute it via the oil channels to the selector elements (clutches and brakes).
Automatic Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-
The electronic control module specifies the switching points. The functioning of the transmission is monitored by On Board Diagnostic (OBD). In the event of failure of components or sensors, an emergency running program is activated, to maintain road worthiness.
Torque converter lock-up clutch (LC)
It transfers the engine torque to the transmission by mechanical means.
