Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Indirect System

Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Indirect System

Observe notes about usage in your Owner's Manual.

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is a software module in the ESP/ABS control module that detects slow losses of pressure in the wheels. With the help of the ABS sensors, the TPMS compares the speed and rolling circumference of the individuals wheels. The rolling circumference of a tire changes, the TPMS indicator in the instrument cluster illuminates. Rolling circumference of tire may be change if:

The tire pressure is too low.

The tire has structural damage.

The vehicle is loaded on one side.

The tires on one axle are loaded more heavily (for example when towing a trailer or driving up and down inclines).

Snow chains are installed.

The spare tire is installed.

One wheel per axle was changed. (also if exchanging the tires from front to rear or vice versa).

System Malfunction in the TPMS

A system malfunction is stored in the DTC memory for the ABS/ESP control module and indicated by the yellow TPMS lamp in the instrument cluster. The TPMS lamp cannot be turned off by pressing the TPMS button. Proceed as follows if there is a fault stored in the DTC memory.

- Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system (VAS 5051) and select "Guided Fault Finding".

- Chassis

- Brake System

- 01-On Board Diagnostic capable systems

- 03 Brake electronics ABS/ESP Mark 60 or Mark 70

- J104 ABS/ASR/ESP Control Module, Functions

- Check the tire pressure monitoring system.

Initial Calibration, Performing

To perform an initial calibration, press the TPMS and ESP/ASR button while the ignition is switched on and the vehicle is stopped until a signal tone is heard. No additional calibration is needed after the initial calibration.

Perform Calibration: (readapt tire pressure)

Each time a tire is changed, press and hold the TPMS button with the ignition switched on and the vehicle stopped until a signal tone is heard. The signal tone confirms the calibration procedure and the programming of the new tire pressures.

Adapt the new tire size (not applicable to ABS/ESP Mark 60 EC)

- Connect (VAS 5051) and select "Guided Fault Finding".
