Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair






Front Exhaust Pipe with Catalytic Converters and Front Muffler

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Spring Type Clip Pliers (VAS 5024 A)

Removing

- Remove the engine cover and air filter.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - arrow - for heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) (G39) and oxygen sensor (O2S) heater (Z19) and free up the wiring.






- Remove the accessible nuts - arrows - for the front exhaust pipe/turbocharger from above.






- Remove the right vehicle underbody cover - arrows -.






- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow - for oxygen sensor (O2S) after three way catalytic converter (TWC) (G130) and heater for oxygen sensor (O2S) 1 after catalytic converter (Z29) and free up wiring.






- Remove the remaining nuts - arrows - for the front exhaust pipe/turbocharger from below.






- Remove the supports for the front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter, by removing bolts - 1 and 2 -.

Flex joints in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°, otherwise they may be damaged.

- Disconnect the exhaust system at the clamping sleeve - arrows -.






- Remove crossmember for vehicle floor - arrows -.






- Remove bracket for exhaust system - arrows -.






- Remove front exhaust pipe with catalytic converters and front muffler.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

For the correct tightening specifications, refer to => [ Exhaust System Overview ] Exhaust System Overview

Replace gaskets and self-locking nuts.

- Install exhaust system free of stress. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Procedures.
