Technical Background

Production Solution

Updated ECM software is installed starting with VIN 8P_6A073016

Service

Only perform this Technical Bulletin on affected vehicles showing the condition described above.

If diagnosis does not reveal a malfunction (for example: battery is discharged, etc.), reprogramming of the ECM is necessary.

If ECM Part No. is already 8P0 907 115 B and software data level is 0060 (or higher), update programming is NOT necessary.

"Update - Programming" CD Part No: 8P0 906 961 H, (packaged with Technical Bulletin, Group 24, number 05- 05, dated Oct. 28, 2005), has already arrived at dealerships.

"Update - Programming" procedure prerequisites:

Tip:

- The "Update - Programming" process may overwrite any "TUNED" ECM programming.

- A "TUNED" ECM is described as any ECM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Audi of America, Inc.

If you encounter a vehicle with a "Tuned" ECM, prior to performing the "Update - Programming" procedure:

- Your Dealership should place the vehicle owner on notice in writing, that their ECM was found to have been tuned, and that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Audi of America, Inc. warranties.

- For any repair requested by the owner under warranty or outside warranty that requires flashing which will automatically wipe out the "Tuning" program, your Dealership should advise the owner of the above and get Owner's written consent (see Control Module Tuning form shown in this bulletin) to the flashing procedure.

Tool requirements:

- VAS 5051 or 5052 Diagnostic tool (with Basis CD V.07.01 and the Brand CD V.07.41 or higher) with old diagnosis logs erased prior to start.

- "Update - Programming" CD Part No: 8P0 906 961 H.

Tip:

Additional copies of the "Update-Programming" CD Part No: 8P0 906 961 H may be ordered from the Audi Technical Literature Ordering Center.

Vehicle requirements:

- Battery MUST have minimum no-load charge of 12.5 V. Failure to maintain voltage during update process can lead to ECM failure (you must use an approved battery charger to maintain battery voltage).

- VAS 5051/VAS 5052: connected to vehicle with battery voltage requirements met.

- Any appliances with high electromagnetic radiation (i.e. mobile phones) switched OFF.

- Vehicle electrical consumers are OFF (i.e. radio, lights, A/C, etc.).

"Update - Programming" procedure, checking software level:

Tip:

The CD ROM should be in the VAS 5051 / 5052 when the scan tool is started up or, inserted when the start screen is showing. Check the light on the CD drive. It must have stopped flashing before going to the "Select Vehicle System" screen or the CD ROM will not be recognized.

- Switch ignition ON.

- Switch VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 diagnostic tool ON (with Update Programming CD in CD drive).

- Select "Vehicle Self Diagnosis" mode

- Select Vehicle system "01-Engine electronics".

- Ensure that "Update - Programming" appears at the bottom of the screen.

If "Update - Programming" does not appear:

- Check software level at arrow.

If ECM software level (arrow) is 0060 or higher:

- "Update - Programming" is NOT required.

If ECM software level (arrow) is lower than 0060:

- Proceed to "PRIOR to performing Update - Programming" of the ECM.

Tip:

- When performing the Update - Programming procedure, ALL DTCs for all systems are erased.

- DTCs linked to Guided Fault Finding function tests will be lost. Therefore, always address stored DTCs for Customer concerns unrelated to the Update - Programming procedure first.

Prior to performing "Update - Programming":

- Select "Vehicle Self Diagnosis" mode.

- Select Diagnosis function "00 - Collection services".

- Select "Check DTC memory - complete system", which will interrogate all fault memories.

When DTC interrogation is complete "Function Complete" will be displayed.

- Select back arrow on navigation bar to return to vehicle systems screen.

- Select vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics".

"Update - Programming" procedure, performing:

- Select "Update - Programming" option at bottom of screen (arrow)

After selecting "Update - Programming" function, new software level 0060 is indicated along with approximate timing for update.

- By selecting the forward arrow on the navigation bar, the programming procedure begins.

NOTE:
Once "Update - Programming" function has been started, switching ignition OFF or disconnecting the diagnostic connector may damage the ECM.

Similar screen appears.

The previous data in the ECM is erased and the new data is being transferred to the module from the flash CD.

Tip:

Please do not carry out any other work on the vehicle during "Update - Programming" (Process could be interrupted).

Tip:

If, during the "Update - Programming", a fault message is displayed:

- Confirm that VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 diagnostic tool power supply is adequate and that ALL appliances with high electromagnetic radiation (i.e. mobile phones) are switched OFF.

- The "Update - Programming" process must then be started from the beginning using the "Repeat" button (arrow). DO NOT use the "Cancel" button.

Once "Update - Programming" is complete, the control module must be re-initialized.

- The tester requests you to switch the ignition OFF

- Switch ignition OFF.

- Wait 20 seconds and switch ignition ON.

Similar screen appears.

- Print out the displayed screen.

- Attach a copy of print to vehicle Repair Order.

- Select forward arrow on navigation bar.

Fault memories, erasing after "Update - Programming". To erase ALL fault memories:

- Select forward arrow on navigation bar.

Once fault memories have been erased:

- Similar screen appears.

- Function ended appears at bottom of screen.

Finish update of the ECM:

- Select backward arrow on navigation bar.

Similar screen appears.

Updated software level "0060" will appear at arrow).

Update - Programming CD can now be removed from VAS5051 or VAS 5052 Diagnostic tool.

- Print the ECM screen to verify ECM update software level.

- Attach print to vehicle Repair Order.

- Select "Go to" then select "Exit"

- Set readiness code.

Use VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 to set readiness code.
