Wheel Bearing Unit
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Grease Cap Puller (VW 637/2)
• Press Tube (3241/4)
• Torque Wrench 40-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1410)
• Socket XZN 18 (T10162)
Removing
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove wheel.
Loosen the dust cap by tapping lightly on the claw on the (VW 637/2).
- Press off dust cap.
- Remove brake carrier and brake caliper and tie them to body with wire.
• Do not allow brake caliper to hang from brake line.
- Remove the bolt and then remove the brake disc.
- Remove the multi-point socket bolt with the (T10162).
- Remove wheel bearing unit from stub axle.
• Avoid contaminating with dirt and damaging the seal when setting down/storing.
The wheel bearing - 1 - must always face up.
- Always set the wheel bearing unit down on the wheel hub - 2 -.
Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal, with special attention to the following:
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Subframe, Diagonal Brace, Lower Transverse Link, Upper Transverse Link, Tie Rod and Level Control System Overview ] Subframe, Diagonal Brace, Lower Transverse Link, Upper Transverse Link, Tie Rod and Level Control System Overview.
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing Housing, Wheel Bearing Unit, Trailing Arm with Mounting Bracket and Stone Deflector Overview ] Wheel Bearing Housing, Wheel Bearing Unit, Trailing Arm With Mounting Bracket and Stone Deflector Overview.
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Shock Absorber and Coil Spring Overview ] Shock Absorber and Coil Spring Overview.
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Stabilizer Bar Overview ] Stabilizer Bar Overview.
- Carefully slide wheel hub/wheel bearing unit onto stub axle.
• Make sure that wheel hubs/wheel bearing unit do not cant!
- Install a new multi-point socket head bolt and tighten.
• First tighten the bolt to the given torque specification using the torque wrench.
• Use a rigid wrench to apply additional torque angle.
- Drive in dust cap.
• Always replace dust caps.
• Damaged dust caps allow moisture to enter. Therefore, always use the tool shown.
Further installation is in the reverse sequence to removal.
- Mount wheel and tighten. Refer to => Wheel and Tire Guide 44 Specifications.
