March 9, 2007
2012887/2. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 69 number 06-04 dated Oct. 9, 2006 due to addition of Saga warranty data.
Vehicle Information
Condition
This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect for 15 months from date of publication. After that date, this RVU will expire and no longer be in effect.
Vehicle must meet ALL of the following criteria:
1. Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the IQ code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair
2. Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.
3. Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.
Procedure must also be performed on applicable vehicles in Dealer inventory.
This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:
Airbag warning light on. DTC 02756/014-Redundant signal path for passenger airbag shut-off Faulty/Sporadic is stored in 15-Airbag.
Technical Background
NOTE:
This TB is intended to proactively address an issue that has not been seen in any of the affected vehicles. The issue is long-term in nature and could occur, if at all, only after (1) the vehicle has been subjected to an extended period of in-vehicle usage and (2) all the specific conditions described are present.
In cases where battery voltage is insufficient such as a faulty battery, faulty charging system, cold weather or after the vehicle has been inactive for a long period of time the available battery voltage during engine crank is further compromised. If the ignition key is cycled off during this time, the airbag control unit can mistakenly interpret the voltage spikes created by the P.O.D.S. voltage generator as a fault in the redundant signal path. The airbag control unit then stores the fault 02756 / 014-Redundant signal path for passenger airbag shut-off.
Production Solution
New airbag control unit software changing the internal self test parameters:
^ A3: HW 12 / SW 3890
^ A4: HW 12 / SW 3840
Service
Software flash update for affected A3 and A4 models with the following airbag hardware and software variants:
^ 2006 A3: HW 12 / SW 3790
^ 2006 A4: HW 12 / SW 3740
1. Ensure the operator has a valid GeKo user ID and password. Only perform operations explicitly stated in the RVU.
2. Check to see that the following tester requirements are met: VAS 5051A Minimum Base CD Version 10.02 with Brand CD 50 installed (not yet released)
^ VAS 5051B/5052 Minimum Base CD Version 10.01 with Brand CD 49 installed
^ VAS 5051X is plugged into a 110V AC Power supply at all times
^ Connect 5051B and 5052 to the Local Network
^ Connect 5051A to the Local Network before tester startup
^ For A4s after VIN 8E_5A400000 (B7 Platform), always use the 6017B K Line Adapter to ensure communication to all modules.
Note:
Do not use a 6017 or 6017A while flashing. Doing so may result in complete control module failure.
3. Check to see that the following vehicle requirements are met:
^ Battery MUST have minimum no-load charge of 12.5V
^ Connect vehicle to a powered Audi-approved battery charger/maintainer
^ Turn off the radio and all other accessories, and when necessary, switch running lights off by applying the emergency brake.
^ Turn off any appliances with high electromagnetic radiation (i.e. mobile phones)
4. In the VAS Tester enter into GFF program. Address or record all DTCs related to a customer concern before continuing. Sporadic communication DTCs will be created during the flash procedure and must be erased with all other sporadic DTCs by GFF after exiting the flash test plan.
5. Enter the airbag control module update function plan into the User Test Plan by selecting the following inside GFF:
Go To>>Function / Component Selection>>Body>>Body>>On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems>>15-Airbag 9.4>>Partial systems, marginal conditions>>J 234-Airbag Control Module, update programming and carry out the update.
6. Upon completion of the test plan Exit GFF via the Go to button. Answer the Warranty questions accordingly and print out or save the Diagnostic Log when prompted.
