Evaporator, Cleaning With Ultrasound A/C Cleaner
Evaporator, Cleaning with Ultrasound A/C Cleaner
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Ultrasound A/C Cleaner (VAS 6189).
• Cleaning Fluid (VAS 6189/1)
• Numerous procedures varying in their application and effect are available on the market for cleaning the evaporator. Currently Audi offers the (VAS 6189) which has been approved and released for cleaning the evaporator.
Preparation
- Check whether odor is actually in A/C evaporator by switching from fresh air to recirculation.
• The odor can only be removed by cleaning with the (VAS 6189) if it originates in the evaporator.
- Check plenum chamber and water drain valves installed there and clean them if necessary. Refer to => [ Plenum Chamber Water Drain, Checking and Cleaning ] Testing and Inspection.
- Remove dust and pollen filter and check it for odor and contamination. Refer to=> [ Dust and Pollen Filter ] Service and Repair.
• On this vehicle, the dust and pollen filter is installed between Fresh Air Blower (V2) and evaporator, therefore it must be removed for the cleaning.
- Clean the installation compartment for dust and pollen filter of heating and A/C unit of leaves, dust and other contaminants, refer to => [ Dust and Pollen Filter ] Service and Repair.
- Reseal opening on A/C unit through which dust and pollen filter was removed.
- Start the engine.
- Open an instrument cluster vent.
- Close the windows and the sunroof.
Settings on vehicles with automatically regulated A/C system (on Climatronic Control Module (J255) )
- Set operating mode "recirculated air mode" on A/C system control head and switch off compressor "Econ".
• Depending on the version of the A/C control head, it is possible to identify when "Econ"is on. Either the indicator lamp inside the ECON button will be on and the indicator lamp in the AC button will be off.
- Set the lowest possible temperature for the driver and front passenger side (for example, temperature preselect "Lo").
- Set the lowest fresh air blower speed and select the air flow direction to "instrument panel vents".
Settings on vehicles with manually regulated A/C system (on A/C system controls, A/C Control Module (J301) )
- Set the lowest possible temperature (temperature rotary switch at "cold" stop) and "recirculating air mode".
- Switch off the A/C compressor via the -button (indicator lamp in -button does not light up)
- Set the air flow direction to "instrument panel vents" via the air distribution rotary switch.
- Set speed 1 on fresh air blower rotary switch.
Cleaning
- Shake the bottle of (VAS 6189/1) and then fill the (VAS 6189). Be sure to read the Operating Instructions that come with the (VAS 6189).
- Place (VAS 6189) in passenger side footwell.
- Start (VAS 6189) (according to operating instructions) and route outlet hose belonging to it so vapor escaping via A/C unit recirculated air opening (in passenger footwell behind glove compartment) is drawn in by Fresh Air Blower (V2).
- Close vehicle doors.
• Cleaning procedure lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes, it is complete when vapor no longer escapes from outlet hose of (VAS 6189).
Finishing steps
- Switch (VAS 6189) off.
- Switch off ignition.
- Open vehicle doors and air out vehicle at least 10 minutes.
- Remove (VAS 6189) from vehicle and clean it according to operating instructions.
- Install dust and pollen filter. Refer to => [ Dust and Pollen Filter ] Service and Repair.
