Safety functions of transmission control module 02E, 6 Speed Direct Shift AWD A/T
If one or more components/sensors fails, the transmission control module activates appropriate substitute functions. This ensures non-destructive operation of the transmission with respective implications on shift function and quality.

When malfunctions are detected by the transmission, a distinction is made between 4 possible statuses:
^ 1.: The fault is stored and a substitute program permits further driving (in some cases with restrictions). The driver receives no indication of this status as it is not critical to driving safety or the transmission. The gear selection indicator in the instrument cluster provides a normal display of the current selector lever position. If at all, the driver will only notice the fault in terms of handling problems and will then automatically consult Audi Service.
^ 2.: Certain selector lever positions will flash in the gear selection indicator of the instrument cluster. This informs the driver that this gear can presently not be selected. This is the case, e.g., if "D" is engaged while driving in reverse (selector lever position "R" and vehicle still rolling backwards). In this case, the selector lever positions "D" will flash in the gear selection indicator of the instrument cluster. The transmission control module stops 1st gear from being engaged to prevent transmission damage. After vehicle has come to a standstill, 1st gear is then engaged.
^ 3.: The entire gear selection indicator in instrument cluster is illuminated and flashes. The selector lever position that has been selected is identified in the instrument cluster, e.g. "D" highlighted. This indicates the transmission is overloaded or the maximum temperature in transmission is exceeded (overheating), e.g. during trailer operation under excessively high load.
^ 4.: Fully illuminated, flashing gear selection indicator in instrument cluster is an indication of a serious fault in the transmission. The selector lever position that has been selected is no longer indicated in the display of the instrument cluster. The situation is critical in terms of driving safety or for the transmission. It may no longer be possible to select all gears. The flashing gear selection indicator panel prompts driver to immediately consult Audi Service.
