VAS 5051 or VAG 1551, Connecting
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system ( VAS 5051)
Test Requirements
• Battery voltage at least 11 V
• Ground (GND) connections at engine and transmission OK
• Engine off
• Automatic transmission in the "P" or "N" position
Procedure
- Switch off the ignition and connect the VAS 5051 with accessory pack (VAS 5050/1). Alternatively, connect the scan tool (V.A.G 1551) with the diagnosis lead for the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system ( VAS 5051 ).
• The following description only covers the procedure for On Board Diagnostic (OBD) when using the scan tool (V.A.G 1551).
• When using vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system (VAS 5051), follow the procedures described in the operating instructions for the tester.

• If display screen remains blank, refer to => Operating instructions for scan tool.
- Switch the ignition on.
- Switch on the scan tool printer by pressing Print button. Indicator lamp in button must come on.
- Press button 1 for "Rapid data transfer".
If the following is indicated on display:
Rapid data transfer HELP
Enter address word XX
• Address word 00 starts the automatic test sequence, i.e. the fault memories of all vehicle systems with self-diagnosis capability are interrogated by way of rapid data transfer.
- Enter "01" for the address word "Engine electronics " and confirm your entry by pressing the Q button.
The scan tool (VAG 1551) will display the control unit identification details, for example:

• The control module identification can be printed out by pressing the PRINT button on the scan tool (VAG 1551).
