Driveshaft Output Flange Shaft Seal, Replacing
• A revised seal with sealing lip - arrow B - is being supplied for the driveshaft output flange (rear flange shaft). To assure perfect sealing, the output flange/driveshaft must be replaced.
• Check the part numbers to prevent a repeat repair or having to replace the output flange/driveshaft. The output flange/driveshaft with a groove - arrow A - for the seal with sealing lip has part number ( 01V 409 809 A).
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Thrust Piece (T40105)
Procedure
- Remove the front exhaust pipes.
- Remove driveshaft heat shield - arrows -.
- Remove the driveshaft - 1 - from the transmission. Refer to and lay it on the heat shield - 2 -.
- Secure driveshaft with wire - arrow - on fuel line bracket - 3 - or support driveshaft with Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).
- Drain axle oil in transfer case. Refer to => [ Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Checking and Correcting ] .
- Remove output flange Counter-hold output flange with mandrel to keep it from turning.
- Remove output flange.
- Remove the seal with a suitable screwdriver.
CAUTION!
Pay attention to the depth.
Never install the seal to tool stop.
• Drive-in depth: 1.7 mm under surface of cover.
- Install the seal evenly using the Thrust Piece ( T40105) to the installation depth without tilting the seal.
- Secure output flange with hex socket head bolt.
- Attach the driveshaft to the transmission.
- Fill transfer case with gear oil and check oil level. Refer to => [ Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Checking and Correcting ] .
