Front Final Drive Seal Intermediate Flange
(Transmission installed)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Thrust piece (3404)
• An inspection opening is provided on the left side of the intermediate flange to check for oil leaks (arrow) for the sealing ring in drive pinion and the sealing ring in intermediate flange.
• If oil escapes at this oil leak inspection opening, this double sealing ring must be replaced.
Removing
- Remove center differential. Refer to => [ Center Differential ] .
- Removing intermediate flange for front final drive. Refer to => [ Front Final Drive Seal ] Front Final Drive Seal.
- Drive out sealing ring (arrow) in direction of transfer gear using a mandrel.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:
- Check seal seat in intermediate flange for damage; rework if necessary.
- Coat outer edge and sealing lip of oil seal with gear oil.
- Slide sealing ring onto thrust piece (3404) so that the larger and projecting outer ring (arrow) of sealing ring faces tool.
- Drive in sealing ring up to thrust piece (3404 ) stop.
• If installing the intermediate flange to the output shaft carelessly, the sealing lip of the sealing ring can be damaged.
- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease G 052 128 A1.
- Installing intermediate flange for front final drive. Refer to => [ Front Final Drive Seal ] Front Final Drive Seal.
- Install center differential. Refer to => [ Center Differential ] .
