Cover and Upholstery, Separating from Backrest Frame
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Closing pliers (VAS 6138)
1 Peripheral Fastening Strips
2 Side Airbag
3 Zip Fastener
4 Protective Cover for Side Airbag
5 Opening in Cushion
6 Retainer
7 Cover
• Removal:
- Remove rear bench seat: through October 2004, refer to => [ Bench Seat, through October 2004 ] Rear Seats; from November 2004 => [ Bench Seat, from November 2004 ] Rear Seats.
- Remove rear seat backrest. Refer to => [ Rear Seat Backrest, Fixed ] Rear Seats.
- Remove headrests.
• Headrests with slide in locking mechanism, refer to => [ Headrests with Locking Mechanism ] Rear Seats
• Headrests without slide in locking mechanism, refer to => [ Headrests without Locking Mechanism ] Rear Seats
- Remove headrest guides:
• Headrest guides with slide in locking mechanism, refer to => [ Headrest Guides with Locking Mechanism ]
• Outer headrest guides without slide in locking mechanism, refer to => [ Outer Headrest Guides without Locking Mechanism ] Outer Headrest Guides Without Locking Mechanism
• Inner headrest guides without slide in locking mechanism, refer to => [ Inner Headrest Guides without Locking Mechanism ] Inner Headrest Guides Without Locking Mechanism
- Use a screwdriver to pry out retaining strips - 1 - all around.
- Pull the cover - 7 - down over the bracket - 6 -.
- Turn back cover - 7 - in area of side airbag - 2 -.
- Unzip - 3 - protective cover of side airbag - 4 -.
- Pull out protective cover for side airbag - 4 - through opening in cushion - 5 -.
- Remove cover and cushion from backrest frame.
• Installing:
Install cover and upholstery in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- Close zip fastener on side airbag protective cover with Closing Pliers (VAS 6138).

• Awl (V.A.G 1636A)
1 Cover
• Removal:
- Pry brackets - 3 - out of plastic clips - 4 - using awl (V.A.G 1636A) - 5 -.
- Remove the cover - 1 - from the cushion - 2 -.
• Installing:
Install cover in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- Replace damaged plastic clips.
- First press retainers of cross braces into plastic clips.
