Left Cylinder Head, Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Polydrive Bit And Drive Socket (T10070)

Work procedure

• Engine installed.

• All cable ties opened or cut during engine removal must be reinstalled at the same locations during installation.

- Remove intake manifold. Refer to => [ Intake Manifold ] Intake Manifold.

- Remove cover - 1 - in engine compartment (left side).





- Disconnect coolant hoses - 1 to 3 - to coolant reservoir.





- Remove coolant expansion tank - arrow -.

- Disconnect the electrical connection at Engine Coolant Level (ECL) Warning Switch (F66) at bottom of coolant expansion tank.

- Disconnect electrical connector to Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 2 (G163) - 1 - and to Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 4 (G301) - 2 -.





- Remove rear ground wire from cylinder head.

- Remove toothed belt => [ Toothed Belt ] Service and Repair.

- Remove camshaft gears from left cylinder head.

- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove left rear toothed belt guard.





- Remove bolts - arrows - to front coolant pipe on cylinder head.





Vehicles with Multitronic transmission 01J or automatic transmission 01V

- Disconnect vacuum hose to brake booster - arrows -.





All:

- If equipped, remove heat shield for left electrical connectors from bulkhead.

- Remove bolts - 1 - at Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system combination valve flange.





- Remove bolts - 2 - and - 3 - on rear coolant pipe on cylinder head.

• Coolant pipe and combi-valve remain installed.

• To improve clarity, shown with the engine removed.

- Remove nut - 2 - from left exhaust pipe/exhaust manifold threaded connection which is accessible from top.





• To improve clarity, shown with the engine removed.

- Remove front crossmember by removing screws - 1 to 4 -.





• Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°, otherwise it may be damaged.





- Disconnect exhaust system at left double clamp - left arrow -.

- Remove nuts - 1 - and - 3 - of left exhaust pipe/exhaust manifold threaded connection, which are accessible from bottom.





• To improve clarity, shown with the engine removed.

- Disconnect front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.

All:

- Loosen cylinder head bolts in the sequence - 1to8 -.





- Carefully remove cylinder head.
