Muffler: Service and Repair

Center and Rear Mufflers, Separating

• A separating point has been provided in the connecting pipe for individual replacement of the center or rear muffler.

• The separating point is marked by a depression around the circumference of the exhaust pipe.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Chain pipe cutter (VAS6254)





Work procedure





• An All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle is shown in the illustration.

• Procedure is the same for front wheel drive vehicles as for (AWD) vehicles.

- Cut exhaust pipe using chain pipe cutter (VAS6254) at right angle at separating point - arrow -.





• The middle of the 3 impressions on the exhaust pipe is the separating point.

- Position clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 - centrally on separation point.





- When installing the double clamps, ensure that the bolt ends do not project beyond the lower edge of the double clamp.





• Threaded connections point toward outside.

- Align exhaust system free of tension:

• Vehicles with AWD. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Procedures.

• Vehicles with FWD. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Procedures.
