Front Passenger Airbag
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1410)
• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051 A)
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
1 Front Passenger Airbag Unit
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
Note assignment of airbag unit to instrument panel.
• Removal:
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove glove compartment. Refer to => [ Glove Compartment ] Storage Compartments and Covers.
- Disconnect connector behind airbag unit. Refer to => [ Disconnect Airbag Connector ]
CAUTION!
Connector - 5 - (2-pin, red) on passenger airbag unit must not be disconnected under any circumstances!
- Remove brace behind airbag unit.
- Remove nut - 3 - (Qty. 4).
- Remove airbag unit.
- Lay airbag unit so padding faces upward.
• Installing:
CAUTION!
Note assignment of airbag unit to instrument panel.
- Install airbag unit.
- Ensure connector behind airbag unit engages completely (audibly). Refer to => [ Disconnect Airbag Connector ]
- Switch the ignition on.
CAUTION!
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect battery ground (GND) strap.
• Follow safety measures after connecting battery.
• If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ( K75) shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051 A), cleared and then rechecked.
2 Supports
• Always replace after airbag has deployed.
• Remove passenger airbag unit
• Remove bolts - 4 - (Qty. 4).
3 Nuts (Qty. 4)
• Tightening specification 9 Nm
• Always replace after airbag has deployed
4 Screws (Qty. 4)
• Tightening specification 9 Nm
• Always replace after airbag has deployed
5 Connector
6 Airbag unit frame
• Always replace after airbag has deployed.
• Remove passenger airbag unit
Disconnect Airbag Connector
- Press retainer - A - and disconnect connector in - direction of arrow -.

Front Passenger Airbag Disabled Indicator Lamp, through October 2003
If the Front Passenger's Airbag Disabled Indicator Lamp (K145), entire interior light/reading light must be replaced.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Special hook (3370)
Removing
- Open the glove compartment.
- Carefully remove trim - 1 - using hook for front end (3370).
- Carefully out pull Front Passenger's Airbag Disabled Indicator Lamp (K145) - 1 - of switch mount using screwdriver - arrows -.
- Disconnect electrical connector.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
- Press switch into instrument panel mount and engage.
