Front Airbag Igniters

Driver's Side Airbag Igniter (N199) and Front Passenger's Side Airbag Igniter (N200) (normal seat, power seat, interior-mounted airbag), removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1410)





• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051 A)





• Engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095)





• Fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136)





• Upholstery clip pliers (V.A.G 1634)





CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.

• Removing

- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.

- Remove seat:

• Standard seat: from November 2004, refer to => [ Standard Front Seat ] Standard Front Seat, From November 2004

• Power seat: from November 2004, refer to => [ Power Front Memory Seat ] Power Front Memory Seats, From November 2004

• Recaro Seat, from November 2004, Refer to => [ Seat ] Recaro Front Seats, From November 2004

- Mount the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136) on the engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095).

- Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136).

- Remove backrest panel:

• Standard seat: from November 2004, refer to => [ Backrest Cover ] Standard Front Seat, From November 2004

• Power seat: from November 2004, refer to => [ Backrest Cover ] Power Front Memory Seats, From November 2004

• Recaro Seat, from November 2004, refer to => [ Backrest Cover ] Recaro Front Seats, From November 2004

- Pry off lower fastening strips - 9 - (Qty. 3) with a screwdriver.

- Pry off side retainer strips - 1 - with a screwdriver and fold cover forward.

- Cut upholstery clips - 10 - (Qty. 4) at protective cover for side airbag - 6 -.

- Press latch - 3 - downward and disconnect electrical harness connector for side airbag - 2 -.

- Remove screw - 7 -.

- Drill out rivet - 5 -.

- Lift side airbag - 4 - upward and remove it.

• Installing

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order. When doing so, note the following:

- Engage side airbag - 4 - into backrest frame.

- Press side airbag - 4 - downward until it stops.

- Place eye of Ground (GND) cable - 11 - between backrest frame and side airbag - 4 -.

- Secure ground cable - 11 - with a rivet.

- Replace screw - 7 -.

- Bolt side airbag - 4 - on with bolt - 7 -.

- Make sure that airbag cable - 13 - runs through cable guide - 14 - and is secured by clip - 12 - to backrest frame.

- Use upholstery clip pliers (V.A.G 1634) to install new upholstery clips on protective cover for side airbag.

- Switch on ignition.

CAUTION!
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.

- Connect the battery ground (GND) strap.

• Follow safety measures after connecting battery.

• If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ( K75) shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051 A), cleared and then rechecked.

• Tightening specification 10 Nm

• Replace after each disassembly
