Instrument Panel

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

TORX screwdriver T8 (T 40056)





Special hook (3370)





Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1783)





Removing

CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions with disconnecting battery.

CAUTION!
Note assignment of airbag unit to instrument panel.

- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.

- Remove the driver airbag unit:

=> [ Driver Airbag Unit, Standard Steering Wheel ] Driver Airbag, Servicing

=> [ Driver Airbag Unit, Sport Steering Wheel ] Driver Airbag, Servicing

=> [ Driver Airbag Unit, Multifunction Steering Wheel ] Driver Airbag, Servicing

=> [ Driver Airbag Unit, RS 4 ] Driver Airbag, Servicing

- Remove the steering wheel.

- Remove storage compartment on driver's side. Refer to => [ Driver Side Storage Compartment, with and without Knee Bolster ] Storage Compartments and Covers.

- Remove instrument cluster.

- Remove glove compartment. Refer to => [ Glove Compartment ] Storage Compartments and Covers.

- Remove front passenger-side airbag unit. Refer to => [ Front Passenger Airbag ] Front Passenger Airbag, Servicing.

- Remove center console:

USA, through October 2004 => [ Center Console, through October 2004 ] Storage Compartments and Covers

USA vehicles from => [ Center Console, from November 2004 ] Storage Compartments and Covers.

- Remove instrument cluster center piece. Refer to => [ Instrument Panel Center Section ] Storage Compartments and Covers.

Lamp Switch and Headlamp Range Control Adjuster, Removing





- Press light switch - arrow 1 - and turn toward right simultaneously - arrow 2 -.

- Hold switch in this position and remove light switch from switch housing - 3 -.





- Disconnect electrical connector.

- Press headlamp range control adjuster out of switch housing.





- Disconnect electrical connector.

Steering Column Switch Upper Trim, Removing





Driver's side airbag unit and steering wheel removed.

- Pull steering column all the way out and down.

- Remove bolts - 1 - (Qty. 2).

Tightening specification: 3 Nm

- Remove TORX bolts - 3 - using Special screwdriver T8 (T 40056).

Tightening specification: 0.6 Nm

- Unclip gap cover downward from instrument panel - arrow -.

- Remove upper trim - 2 - for steering column switch.

Removing Photo Sensor





- Carefully pry off cover - A -.

- Remove bolt - B -.

- Disconnect cable connector.

Removing Center Defroster Vent





- Remove bolt - 1 - of defroster vent.

Tightening specification: 0.8 Nm

- Remove defroster nozzle.

Removing Instrument Panel Speaker





Center defroster nozzle removed.

- Remove bolts - 1 - (Qty. 2).

Tightening specification: 2 Nm

- Tip speaker out and disconnect connector.

Disconnecting Harness Connectors For Vent Temperature Sensor





- Disconnect left and right harness connector - arrow - on outside temperature sensors.

The vent temperature sensor is shown on the passenger's side in the illustration.

Left Instrument Panel Cover, Removing





- Pull off left instrument panel cover - arrow - using special hook (3370).

Left Exterior Instrument Panel Mount, Removing





- Remove bolts - 1 - (Qty. 2).

Tightening specification: 4.5 Nm

Right Instrument Panel Cover, Removing





- Pull off right instrument panel cover - arrow - using special hook (3370).

Right Exterior Instrument Panel Mount, Removing





- Remove bolts - 1 - (Qty. 2).

Tightening specification: 4.5 Nm

Removing Driver-Side Instrument Panel Mount





- Remove bolts - 1 - (Qty. 2).

Tightening specification: 4.5 Nm

Center Instrument Panel Mount, Removing





- Remove bolts - 1 - (Qty. 2).

Tightening specification: 3 Nm

- Remove bolts - 2 - (Qty. 2).

Tightening specification: 4.5 Nm

- Remove instrument panel toward rear.

Installing

CAUTION!
Note assignment of airbag unit to instrument panel.

- Check whether felt - 2 - is installed on clip - 1 - on left and right.





- Pressing down lightly, push instrument panel into clip.

- Check seating of front of instrument panel in clip by pulling up lightly.

- Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
