Engine Controls - Engine Runs Rough/Stumbles/Hesitates: Overview
24 08 572010890/8
November 19, 2008. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 24 number 08-23 dated May 14, 2008 for reasons listed below.
Vehicle Information
"01 Cold engine runs rough or stumbles; warm engine may stall when engaging gear and vehicle is stationary"
Condition
The customer may report:
- Engine may idle rough after a cold start.
- Engine may stumble or hesitate at slow initial acceleration after a cold start and under certain weather conditions. Condition will not exist with warm engine.
- Engine may attempt to stall at idle when transmission is shifted from Neutral or Park to Drive or Reverse when coolant temperature is above 176 degrees (80 degrees) and the vehicle is stationary.
No diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are associated with this condition.
Technical Background
Production Solution
New software in the Engine Control Module resolved the problem.
Service
1. Check the ECM to ensure it has not been tuned.
NOTE:
Any Update Programming procedure (flash) may overwrite any tuned ECM or TCM programming. A tuned ECM or TCM is described as any ECM or TCM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Audi of America, Inc.
Current Tuned ECM or TCM Requirements
If you encounter a vehicle with a tuned ECM or TCM, your dealership must do the following before performing any procedure that updates ECM or TCM programming:
a. Notify the owner that their ECM or TCM was found to have been tuned.
b. Notify the owner that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM or TCM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Audi of America, Inc. warranties.
c. Obtain the owner's written consent (see attached Control Module Tuning form) for any requested repair - under warranty or outside warranty - that requires flashing that will automatically overwrite the tuned program.
2. Update the ECM.
a. If the vehicle has a tuned ECM or TCM, ensure the Control Module Tuning form has been filled out by the owner.
b. Check the software part number and software level in the Engine Control Module. If software level is at (or higher than) the level shown in New Software Version column of the table below, no update is necessary. See Warranty table.
c. Prior to beginning the SVM process, insert a USB memory stick into the VAS 505X tester to capture the diagnostic log electronically. In case TAC support is required, attach the diagnostic log to the ticket. The TAC will need this log to assist you.
d. For A4 (B7) always use the 6017B K-Line Adapter to ensure communication to all modules.
e. Update the Engine Control Module using the SVM action code as listed in the table below.
NOTE:
Do not use a 6017 or 6017A while flashing. Doing so may result in complete control module failure.
Tip:
- The SVM Process must be completed in its entirety so the database receives the update confirmation response. A warranty claim may not be reimbursed if there is no confirmation response to support the claim.
- The electric cooling fan may be activated during the ECM updating procedure.
For further SVM update instructions and troubleshooting, please refer to the SVM Operating Manual; ElsaWeb TSB 2011732.
Update the ECM
3. After the software update, byte #3 in the ECM Long Coding needs to be entered as 09.
Warranty
When procedure applies to vehicles under warranty, use the following:
