- Pull off the sealing rubber at the bolted flanges of the fender.
- To prevent damage to the bolted flanges of the fender when using the engine support bridge (10-222 A), insert the fender insert pads (T40045) on both sides between the bolted flange of the fender and web plate lying beneath.
- Position the engine support bridge (10-222 A) with two adapters (10 - 222 A /3) onto the bolted flanges of the fender.
- Engage the spindles onto the engine lifting eyes as shown.
- Take up some of the engine weight by tightening the spindle of the support bar, but do not lift.
- Remove both front wheels and tires.
- On vehicles equipped with an auxiliary heater, remove the bolts - arrows - for the exhaust pipe of the auxiliary heater to the noise insulation.
- Remove the bolts or quick release screws - 1 to 3 - and remove the noise insulation at the front and rear.
- Remove the noise insulation bracket - arrows -.
- Remove the bolts - 1 through 4 - and remove the front crossmember from the vehicle floor.
• The flex joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 degrees, otherwise it may be damaged.
- Disconnect the exhaust system at both double clamps - arrows -.
- Place the plunger of the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A) with a block of wood - 1 - on the transmission bottom.
- Support the tunnel crossmember using the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A).
- First remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -, then bolts - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Slowly lower the tunnel crossmember using the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A).
- Remove the nuts - arrows - and remove the tunnel crossmember.
- If installed, remove the bolt - 1 - for the noise insulation cover over the left and right drive axles.
- Disengage the hook - 2 - and remove the noise insulation cover.
- Remove the left and right heat shields for drive axles - 1 -.
- Remove the drive axle from the transmission flange on the left and right sides.
- Remove the left and right front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter.
- Remove the engine speed (RPM) sensor (G28) bolt - arrow - on the left of transmission and lay to side.
- Remove the bracket for the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) lines - arrow -.
- Place the drip tray for workshop crane (VAS 6208 ) under the transmission.
• Observe the rules of cleanliness for working on transmissions. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.
- Remove the bolt - arrow - and remove the ATF lines from the transmission.
- Seal the openings with clean cover caps.
- Move the ATF lines clear to one side and secure in place.
- Loosen the bolts - arrows - at the torque support stop approximately two rotations each.
- Remove the left and right stabilizer mounts - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Swing the stabilizer bar downward.
- Remove the nuts - 3 - at the engine mount on the left and right far enough until the lower edge of the nut is flush with threaded stud - arrow -.
- Raise the engine using the spindles of the engine support bridge (10-222 A) far enough until both nuts - 3 - (on left and right sides) make contact from below.
- Place the plunger of the engine and transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with a block of wood - 1 - inserted in between the transmission bottom.
- Raise the transmission slightly using the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A).
• Lower bolts on the engine/transmission flange are accessible by doing this.
- Remove the bolts - 8, 9 and 10 - from the engine/transmission flange.
- Lower the engine again using the spindles of the engine support bridge (10-222 A).
- Disengage the electrical harness connector - 1 - and disconnect from the transmission.
- Move the wiring harness clear - arrows -.
- Remove the bolts - 2 - and remove the transmission mount - 1 - from the transmission.
- Remove the bolts - 2 to 6 - from the engine/transmission flange.
- Loosen the bolts - 1 - and - 7 - only and then tighten by hand.
• Starter must not be removed.
