Final Drive, Differential (01V,01VA Transmission)
Transfer Case with Center Differential
Removing
- Remove the front exhaust pipes.
CAUTION!
Do not start or tow vehicle with transfer case removed or when gear oil has been drained.
- Remove the driveshaft heat shield - arrows -.
- Remove the driveshaft - 1 - from the transmission. Refer to and lay it on the heat shield - 2 -.
- Secure driveshaft with wire - arrow - on fuel line bracket - 3 - or support driveshaft with Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).
- Drain axle oil in transfer case. Refer to => [ Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Checking and Correcting ] Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Checking and Correcting.
- Loosen transfer case housing bolts - arrows - diagonally and remove.
CAUTION!
Carefully pull off differential housing from transmission toward the rear. Otherwise the center differential could fall out of the transmission.
- Remove the center differential - arrow - back off of output shaft.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
- Check for alignment sleeve - arrow A - and - arrow B -.
- Install gasket.
• Lightly coat sealing surface - D - with gear oil to prevent the seal from being crushed.
- Slide cleaned magnet into cast holding pocket - 1 - in intermediate flange.
- Fill 200 ml gear oil in output sleeve (fill gear oil with transfer case removed and disassembled. Refer to => [ Gear Oil in Transfer Case, Changing or Filling After Repair ] Gear Oil in Transfer Case, Changing or Filling After Repair).
- Position the center differential - arrow - on connector splines on output shaft and lowest front gear while rotating lightly.
- Make sure the center differential can be turned by hand.
- Install fully assembled transfer housing with installed spur gears and rear output flange onto transmission flange.
- Insert transfer case bolts and tighten to final torque diagonally in several stages.
- Attach the driveshaft to the transmission.
- Fill transfer case with gear oil and check oil level => [ Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Checking and Correcting ] Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Checking and Correcting.
Tightening Specifications
