See Caution before beginning repairs on the electrical system => [ Battery ] Battery
- Note and if necessary, determine radio code for vehicles equipped with coded anti-theft radio / radio navigation system only foreign brands).
- Switch ignition off and disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• drip tray (VAG1306) for (VAG 1202A )
• hose clip pliers (VAG1921)
• Battery charger
Removing
CAUTION!
Hot steam or hot coolant may escape when opening coolant reservoir, cover cap with rag and open carefully.
- Open cap of coolant expansion tank.
- Remove engine cover.
- For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - for exhaust pipe of stationary heater/auxiliary heater on noise insulation.
- Remove bolts or quick release screws - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation.
- Place Drip Tray (VAG1306) beneath engine.
- Remove retaining clip - 1 - and remove Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor (G2) item - 2 -.
- Drain coolant only from radiator.
- Disconnect top coolant hose at coolant pipe - arrow -.
- Unbolt Coolant FC (Fan Control) Control Module - arrow -, disengage control module and set it aside.
- Move ribbed belt tensioner in direction of - arrow - to release tension on ribbed belt..
- Remove ribbed belt from generator belt pulley.
- Release tensioner.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 1 -.
- Remove upper and lower bolts - arrows -.
- Remove generator.
- Unscrew terminal D+.
Installing
Installation is reverse order of removal, paying attention to the following:
- Make sure the ribbed belt is seated and installed correctly.
- Fill up with coolant:
- Connect battery. Required steps => Battery.
- Start engine and check running of belt.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• ribbed belt (3299) installation tool with claw for tensioner (3299/1)
Removing
- Remove front engine cover - arrows -.
• Before removing ribbed belt, mark direction of rotation with chalk or felt-tip marker. Reversing the direction can destroy the belt.
- Move ribbed belt tensioner in direction of arrow to release tension on ribbed belt.
- Remove ribbed belt from power steering pump pulley.
- For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - for exhaust pipe of stationary heater/auxiliary heater on noise insulation.
- Remove bolts or quick release screws - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation.
- Cut cable ties - arrows -, open retainer for starter cable and remove cable.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
- Remove bracket for ATF lines, by unscrewing nuts - 1 - and - 2 -.
All:
- Unclip refrigerant line from bracket at oil pan.
- Disconnect electrical lines from generator.
- Remove bolts - arrows - and generator.
Installing
Installation is reverse order of removal, pay attention to the following:
- Make sure the ribbed belt is seated and installed correctly.

2. Ribbed belt
3. Power steering vane pump
4. A/C compressor
5. Crankshaft
6. Tensioner roller
- Start engine and check belt running.
Tightening Specifications
