General Repair Information

The refrigerant circuit of the A/C system must not be discharged and opened (=> [ Refrigerant Circuit, Draining ] Service Precautions and => Heating and Air Conditioning Heating and Air Conditioning) unless it is necessary because of safety precautions => [ Working on Refrigerant Circuit ] Service Precautions or unless components of the refrigerant circuit of the A/C system have to be to replaced.

The air conditioner refrigerant circuit is not to be opened when performing all other standard vehicle repair operations.

Servicing operations that can be performed on the heating and air conditioning system without opening the refrigerant circuit are described in this Repair Information. Refer to => [ A/C System Control and Regulation Components ] A/C System Control and Regulation Components.

The connections for the senders/switches described in this Workshop Manual are fitted with a valve which closes automatically when the switches are unscrewed. These switches can thus be replaced in any Audi and Volkswagen workshop even though the refrigerant circuit is fully charged.

Servicing operations on the A/C system for which it is necessary to discharge the refrigerant circuit and thus cannot be performed in every Audi workshop are described in. Refer to => Heating and Air Conditioning Heating and Air Conditioning (vehicle must be delivered to an A/C system service point workshop to discharge the refrigerant circuit).

For the Audi Cabrio, different settings are stored for a closed or open convertible top in the Climatronic control module A/C control head. When opening or closing the convertible top, the setting is automatically changed by the Climatronic control module A/C control head to the value that was last set when the convertible top was closed or open.

Starting in April 2002, Climatronic control module A/C control heads with a part number starting with index "H" (software version " XX15" and higher) will be installed gradually. In these Climatronic control module A/C control heads, the temperature control for the passenger compartment is designed to be slightly cooler.

In vehicles starting with model year 2003, only Climatronic control module A/C control heads with a part number starting with index "H" may be installed.

In vehicles with a 4-cylinder engine with a gasoline direct fuel injection system (FSI), only Climatronic control module A/C control heads with a part number starting with index "H" may be installed.

Starting with model year 2003, Climatronic control module A/C control heads with a part number starting with index "H" (software version " XX16" and higher) will be installed gradually. These Climatronic control module A/C control heads deviate from the version with software version " XX15" as follows:

- The temperature control for the passenger compartment in the Audi Cabrio and with an open convertible top was changed and designed to be slightly cooler.

- The temperature setting range was expanded. 16°C can now be set as the lowest temperature (previously 18°C).

In the case of vehicles up to VIN "399999" of model year 2005 (Sedan and Avant) and "012912" of model year 2005 (Cabrio), no Climatronic control module A/C control heads with a part number starting with index "AJ" may be installed.

In the case of vehicles starting with VIN "400000" of model year 2005 (Sedan and Avant) and "012913" of model year 2005 (Cabrio), only Climatronic control module A/C control heads with a part number starting with index "AJ" may be installed.
