Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 15 number 08-11 dated November 19, 2008 for reasons listed below.

Vehicle Information

Condition

- MIL on.

- Slight oil loss in front of engine.

- One of three camshaft sealing caps (part number 06B 103 113 C) may be missing.

- The following DTCs may be present:

- DTC 17544 P1136 (Bank 1, Long Term Fuel Trim (add) - System too Lean).

- DTC 17546 P1138 (Bank 2, Long Term Fuel Trim (add) - System too Lean).

Technical Background

One camshaft sealing cap may become loose because of ineffective seating inside the camshaft bore hole. The camshaft sealing cap may become lodged inside the cylinder head.

The leak from the missing seating cap can also lead to a fault entry due to bypass air.

Production Solution

Not applicable.

Service

1. Remove valve cover of affected cylinder head and check whether the sealing cap is inside.

2. Remove cap from inside, if necessary.

3. Missing sealing caps need to be removed and replaced by a new part (part number 06B 103 113C). Use additional sealant.

- On Bank 1, only the hole on the intake side (Figure 2, A) is closed with the cap. On the exhaust side, the vacuum pump is mounted.

- On Bank 2, both holes must be closed with the cap. The hole of the exhaust camshaft (Figure 3, C) is difficult to reach because it is located behind the coolant hose. If the camshaft sealing cap labeled C in Figure 3 is missing and needs to be reinstalled, the coolant hose must be removed. (See Repair group 19 of appropriate Repair Manual.)

4. If the DTCs remain, check the engine for existing air leaks. (See Repair Manual and Guided Fault Finding.)
