Transmission, Installing

Transmission, Installing

Install in the reverse sequence; note the following points:

Clean the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) lines and cooler before installing a replacement transmission. Refer to => [ ATF Pipes and Cooler Cleaning ] ATF Pipes and Cooler Cleaning.

When performing repairs, replace the self locking nuts and bolts.

Replace the bolts which have a specified tightening angle, as well as seals and gaskets.

The heat shield sleeves must be installed in their original positions.

The hose supports and charge air system hoses must be free of oil and grease before installing.

Secure all hose connections with hose clamps of the same type as those equipped by the factory.

All cable ties must be installed in their original positions.

- Before installing the transmission make sure the torque converter is correctly installed in the transmission:

With the torque converter installed correctly, the distance between the contact surfaces on the threaded holes on converter and torque converter bellhousing contact surface is 19 mm.

CAUTION!
If the torque converter is not properly installed, the drive lugs on the torque converter and the ATF pump will be severely damaged when the transmission is attached to the engine.

- Before installing the transmission, make sure the alignment sleeves - A - are correctly positioned on the cylinder block, if necessary install.

- If an intermediate plate was equipped between the engine and transmission, reinstall it in the same position.

- Before guiding together the engine and transmission, turn torque converter and engine drive plate so that one hole and one threaded hole are at the level of the starter opening.

- Make sure that no wires become pinched when connecting the engine and transmission.

Note the following when installing the transmission.

CAUTION!
Before and during tightening the bolts of the engine/transmission, check that the torque converter can still be turned behind the drive plate.

If the torque converter cannot be turned, it must be assumed that it has not been installed properly and that the drive plate of the torque converter or the ATF pump will be destroyed during final tightening of the bolts.

- Install the transmission to engine bolts.

The tightening specifications apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated, or black finished nuts and bolts.

Additional lubricant such as engine or gear oil may be used, but do not use lubricants that contain graphite.

Do not use de-greased parts.

Tolerance for tightening specification ± 15%.

- Insert the guide pins of the adapter (T40058) so that the large diameter - arrow 1 - faces toward the engine. The small diameter - arrow 2 - faces toward the adapter.

- To tighten the torque converter bolts, counter hold the crankshaft with adapter (T40058).

Pay no attention to - arrow -.

- To secure the torque converter to drive plate, use new bolts.

- Install the 3 bolts - arrow - of the torque converter through the opening of the starter hand tight at first (turn crankshaft 1/3 revolution further for each bolt).

On certain engines, all the torque converter bolts - arrows - are difficult to access due to the shape of the engine. To remove or install the bolts, use a long socket wrench.

- Then, tighten the bolts of the torque converter to specifications (turn crankshaft 1/3 revolution further for each bolt).

- Install the starter.

- Loosen the torque support bolts - arrows -.

- Allow stop for torque support to seat on torque support rubber buffer through its own weight and retighten screws.

- Install the transmission mount and bracket. Refer to => [ Transmission Mount and Bracket ] Transmission Mount and Bracket.

If the transmission is being replaced, the transmission mount of the old transmission must be fitted to the new one. Refer to => [ Transmission Mount and Bracket ] Transmission Mount and Bracket.

- Install tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Tunnel Crossmember ] Tunnel Crossmember.

- Tighten the driveshaft to the transmission.

- Attach the drive axles to the flange shafts.

- Electrical connections and routing.

- Check the adjustment of the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Adjusting, through 11.05 ] Selector Lever Cable Adjusting, through 11.05.

- Check the oil level in the front final drive. Refer to => [ Front Final Drive Gear Oil Level Checking ] Front Final Drive Gear Oil Level Checking.

- Check the oil level in the transfer case. Refer to => [ Transfer Case Gear Oil Level Checking ] Transfer Case Gear Oil Level Checking.

- Install the exhaust system, tension-free.

- Heed the appropriate instructions for work to be performed following battery connection.

- Fill the cooling system.

- Check the ATF level in the planetary gearing. Refer to => [ ATF Level Checking and Correcting ] 09LA Automatic Transmission.
