Tailgate, Adjusting (Avant)

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items Required







- Adjusting gauge 3371

Panel Gap Dimensions







- Dimension - A - = 4.5 mm
- Dimension - B - = 0.8 mm
- Dimension - C - = 0.8 mm
- Dimension - D - = 2 mm ± 0.5 mm
- Dimension - E - = 2 mm ± 0.5 mm
- Dimension - F - = 2 mm ± 0.5 mm
- Dimension - G - = 2.5 mm ± 0.5 mm
- Make sure all gaps are parallel to body

NOTE: The gas-filled struts must be attached before installing a new tailgate.

Adjusting With Striker Pin

NOTE: Before adjusting, install adjustment buffer on tailgate side completely.







Vehicle With Solid Striker Pin
- Remove rear cross panel trim.
- Loosen combination nuts - 1 - and - 3 -, striker pin - 2 - must be adjustable.
- Note different versions.







Vehicle With Closing Aid
- Loosen combination screws, striker pin - 2 - with motor for closing aid - 1 - must be adjustable.
- For easier installation, there are markings on rear cross panel you can use to adjust the striker pin.







Upper And Lower Striker Pin End Position

CAUTION:
- To adjust tailgate, closing aid motor must be in lid closed position (lower end position).
- Striker pin cannot be installed in In position not visible in drawing (upper end position) - 1 - because tailgate can contact block when closing and be damaged.
- Closing aid motor cannot be closed electrically to adjust tailgate


- Before adjusting tailgate, completely install upper part of adjustment buffer on tailgate side.







- Tighten nuts - 1 - and - 3 - hand tight.
- Close tailgate and align with body contour.
- Tailgate lock must be engaged in main detent (2nd lug) during this.
- Open tailgate in this position and tighten nuts - 1 - and - 3 - to 21 Nm.







Striker Pin With Closing Aid
- If the same striker pin is reinstalled, mark this location before removing.

NOTE:
- Striker pin with closing aid can only be installed in lid closed position, same as delivery condition for a new part.
- If the same striker pin is reinstalled, open tailgate and unlock tailgate lock or latch with a screwdriver, for example.
- Closing aid runs in lid closed position = basic position.
- Now remove electrical connector from closing aid and tailgate lock can be opened again by activating grip piece in tailgate.

- Tighten nuts - 1 - lightly
- Close tailgate and align with body contour.
- Tailgate lock must be engaged in main detent (2nd lug) during this.
- Open tailgate in this position and tighten nuts - 1 - to 21 Nm.







- When installing, - 3 - tighten screws to 8 Nm.
- Turn adjustment buffer -arrow -until closed tailgate with buffer stop on tailgate side makes contact with stop.
- Check whether tailgate still closes easily, repeat adjustment at adjustment buffer if necessary.
- If tailgate is difficult to close, screw adjustment buffer in.

Adjustment Buffer Installation Position







1 - Tailgate
- When adjusted correctly, adjustment buffer - 3 - must contact stop buffer - 2 - with light pretension when tailgate is closed.

2 - Stop buffer, rear lid side
- Installing
- Tighten screws to 8 Nm when installing.

3 - Adjustment buffer, body side
- Adjustment buffer secured on body-side with bolts
- Tighten screws to 8 Nm when installing.
- Height adjustment is carried out using adjusting screw
- When rear lid is adjusted correctly, adjustment buffer must make contact with light pretension with stop on tailgate side.

Adjusting Screw For Adjustment Buffer

- Before adjusting tailgate, install adjusting screw - 2 - with protective cap - 1 - completely in adjustment buffer - 3 -
- Protective cap - 1 - pressed in.
- Unscrew adjusting screw - 2 - until protective cap - 1 - makes contact with light pretension with stop on tailgate side when tailgate is closed.
- Check whether tailgate sits without play and in flush position by pushing or pulling on the side edge of tailgate below rear window.
- If necessary, repeat adjustment.







Stop, Tailgate Side
- When installing stop - 2 - tighten screw - 1 - to 8 Nm.
- Height adjustment is carried out using adjustment buffer on body side.
