Affected Vehicles

Condition

^ Engine will not start.

^ Ignition cannot be turned on.

^ In some cases, the ignition key cannot be removed from the ignition switch after attempting to start the engine.

Technical Background

No communication with the Access/Start Control Unit (J518), which may be caused by capacitor and or transistor damage within the Access/Start Control Unit (J518).

Production Solution

Introduction of an improved Access/Start Control Unit (J518).

Service

1. Verify that the wire connections are good at the Access/Start Control Unit (J518), and verify voltage supply and grounds are OK.

2. Remove the black/red wire from position 19 of the 20-pin connector located at the Access/Start Control Unit (J518).

Note:
This wire provides the signal (50) from the starter relay. Removal of this circuit is to prevent a possible voltage spike that could cause damage to the Access/Start Control Unit (J518).

3. Tape the wire and terminal back on the wiring harness.

4. Replace the Access/Start Control Unit (J518).
