Safety Precautions When Working On Airbag
- Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
- Never perform tests with a test lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter.
- Airbag system must only be tested with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A.
- Always disconnect power supply when working on airbag system.
- When disconnecting battery observe necessary measures.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire and cover negative terminal. No waiting time is necessary after disconnecting battery.
- There must be no - one in vehicle when battery is being connected.
- After connecting battery observe necessary measures.
- Airbag modules must be installed immediately after removing them from their transport containers.
- If work is interrupted, airbag module must be replaced in its transport container. - Airbag modules must not be left unattended.
- Airbag modules which have been removed must be stored so that padded side is facing upward.
- Never open or repair airbag components. Always use new components only.
- Airbag modules which are dropped on a hard surface or are damaged must not be used.
- Always observe following sequence when replacing an airbag module:
1 - Remove old airbag module and place down with padding facing upward; with side curtain airbag observe procedure for side curtain airbag.
2 - Take new airbag module from transport container and store with padding facing upward; with side curtain airbag observe procedure for side curtain airbag.
3 - Immediately place old airbag module into transport container.
4 - Install new airbag module into vehicle.
- Airbag modules which were not triggered must be marked and be sent back to manufacturer for disposal (use transport containers for airbag modules).
- Never treat airbag modules with grease, cleaning agents or similar; never expose an airbag module (even for brief periods) to temperatures in excess of 212 degrees F (100 degrees C).
CAUTION:
- Obtain anti - theft radio security code.
- Switch ignition on.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire.
- On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off emergency (back-up) battery for Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery.
- After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti - theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Repair Manual and/or Owners Manual.
- After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-on emergency (back-up) battery for Telematic/Telephone Control Module.
