Camshaft Adjustment Valves, Checking

Camshaft Adjustment Valves, Checking

Solenoid Valve for Camshaft Adjustment, Electrical Testing

- Disconnect connector at respective solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment.

- Perform a resistance measurement between terminals on solenoid valve using portable multimeter (VAG1526).

Specified value: 10 to 18 ohms.

If specified value is not obtained.

- Replace respective Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 (N205) / Camshaft Adjustment Valve 2 (N208).

- Read readiness code => [ Readiness Code, Reading ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes. If DTC memory was erased, readiness code must be generated again => [ Readiness Code, Generating ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes.

If specified value is obtained, check voltage supply.

Voltage Supply of Solenoid Valves for Camshaft Adjustment, Checking

- Disconnect connector at respective solenoid valve.

- Connect voltage test lamp (VAG1527) to terminal 1 (B+) of connector and to engine Ground (GND) using cables from connector test kit (VAG1594).

- Operate starter for a few seconds. Engine may also start up during this.

LED must light up.

If diode test lamp does not light up, the following tests must be performed:

- Check fuse for solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment.

If fuse is OK.

- Check wire connection from terminal 1 to Fuel Pump (FP) relay via fuse for continuity.

If voltage test lamp lights up, check activation.

Activation of Valves for Camshaft Adjustment, Checking

- Disconnect connector at respective solenoid valve.

- Connect voltage test lamp (VAG1527) using cables from connector test kit (VAG1594) to sockets 1 (B+) and 2 of connector for respective solenoid valve.

- Operate starter for a few seconds. Engine may also start up during this.

Diode test lamp must blink during activation of camshaft adjustment.

If LED lights up continuously.

- Check wire connection of socket 2 of respective connector of solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment for short circuit to Ground (GND).

If voltage test lamp does not blink.

- Check wire connection.

Wire Connection, Checking

- Connect test box (VAG1598/31) at wiring harness to Engine Control Module (ECM), do not connect ECM.

- Check wire connection of respective connector for solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment for open circuit in wire as well as short circuit to B+.

Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 (N205)

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

- Repair short circuit in wiring or open circuit in wiring if necessary.

Camshaft Adjustment Valve 2 (N208)

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

- Repair short circuit in wiring or open circuit in wiring if necessary.

If there is neither an open circuit in wiring nor a short circuit, replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

- Read readiness code => [ Readiness Code, Reading ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes. If DTC memory was erased, readiness code must be generated again => [ Readiness Code, Generating ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes.

- If no malfunction was recognized for all previous tests, replace the respective mechanical camshaft adjuster.
