Secondary Air Injection Pump Motor, Checking

Secondary Air Injection Pump Motor, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Multimeter (VAG1526) or Multimeter (VAG1715)

Connector test kit (VAG1594)

Wiring diagram

Test Prerequisites

The respective fuses of Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor (V101) must be OK:

Fuel Pump (FP) Relay (J17) must be OK, checking => [ Fuel Pump Relay, Checking ].

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay (J299) must be OK, checking => [ Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay, Checking ].

Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 Volts.

All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.

Ignition switched off.

Test Sequence

- Remove front noise insulation.

- Disconnect air hose - 1 -.

- Disconnect air hose - 2 -.

To disengage, compress the buttons at the hose coupling.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 1 -.

- Connect Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor to the B+ and Ground (GND) terminals of the battery using the respective adapter cables.

The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor must start up and air must escape at compressed-air connection (- arrow -).

If the motor does not start up, or no air or only very little air escapes:

- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor (V101),

- Read readiness code => [ Readiness Code, Reading ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes. If DTC memory was erased, readiness code must be generated again => [ Readiness Code, Generating ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If motor starts and air escapes, check activation of Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay (J299).

Activation, Checking

- Remove Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay (J299) from relay position 1.

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay (J299) is located in relay carrier in E-box, plenum chamber, relay position 1

Remove battery Ground (GND) strap if tools are necessary for removal of relays or control modules from the relay carrier.

- Check wire between terminal 8 of relay socket and terminal 2 of 2-pin connector of Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

- Check the wire for short circuit to B+ and Ground (GND).

Specified value: infinite ohms (infinite)

- Check wire between 2-pin connector terminal 1 (Ground -GND- wire) and vehicle Ground (GND) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

If no malfunction is detected in wires, replace Engine Control Module (ECM), refer to Repair Manual and generate readiness code again => [ Readiness Code, Generating ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes.
