Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay, Checking

Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay, Checking

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay (J299) is located in relay carrier in E-box, plenum chamber, relay position 1

Voltage Supply, Checking

- Remove Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay (J299) from relay position 1.

- Switch ignition on.

- Connect portable multimeter (VAG1526) in sequence between terminals 6 (B+, terminal 15) and 8 (Ground (GND)) as well as 2 (B+, terminal 30) and 8 (Ground (GND)) of relay socket.

Specified value: approx. battery voltage respectively.

- If no battery voltage is displayed, measure plus terminals to vehicle Ground (GND) as a test.

- If there is still no battery voltage, check fuse and B+ wires for open circuit.

- If battery voltage is displayed while measuring to vehicle Ground (GND) and not for terminal 8 (Ground (GND)), check wire connection from terminal 8 to Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor (V101).

Activation, Checking

- Connect voltage test lamp (VAG1527) between terminal 6 (B+, terminal 15) and 4 (Ground (GND) activation of Engine Control Module (ECM)).

- When switching on ignition, voltage test lamp must light up for approx. 1 second and then go out. When operating starter, voltage test lamp must light up constantly.

Voltage test lamps with low current draw do not go out completely after 1 second, but rather light up weakly until starter is operated.

If voltage test lamp lights up, replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay.

If voltage test lamp does not light up, check wire connection as follows:

- Connect test box (VAG1598/31) to wiring harness of Engine Control Module (ECM),

- Connect portable multimeter (VAG1526) between terminal 4 of relay socket and socket 46 of test box and check wire connection for continuity.

- If specified value is not obtained, check wire connection for open circuit or short circuit.

- If there is no open circuit and voltage test lamp does not light up, replace Engine Control Module (ECM), refer to Repair Manual and generate readiness code again => [ Readiness Code, Generating ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes.

- Read readiness code => [ Readiness Code, Reading ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes. If DTC memory was erased, readiness code must be generated again => [ Readiness Code, Generating ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
