Engine and Transmission, Separating

Engine and Transmission, Separating

Engine/transmission unit removed and attached to scissor lift platform (VAS 6131).

- Remove bolts - arrows - for left and right front transmission mounts.

- Remove bolt - arrow -.

- Disconnect right bottom coolant pipe from coolant hose - 1 -.

Ignore - 2 -.

- Twist spindles of attachments - 2 - at left and right on subframe completely downward.

- Remove support pins from spindles.

- Remove subframe - 3 - to the side.

A second technician is required to remove subframe.

- Twist spindles of attachments - 1 - at left and right on engine carrier - 4 - completely downward.

- Remove bolts - arrows - for engine mount on left and right.

- Remove engine carrier.

- Remove the 4 base plates of the support elements for engine carrier and subframe on scissor lift table (VAS 6131).

The support points for front of engine and rear of transmission remain unchanged.

- Equip scissor lift platform (VAS 6131) with support set for Audi (VAS 6131/10) as follows:

* Support elements remain unchanged.

* Two washers (3 mm thick) must also be placed on the support element.

- Remove bolt - 1 - from bottom left of engine/transmission flange.

- Place two washers - arrows - (3 mm total thickness) on the mounting pins of support elements (VAS 6131/10-11) at rear of engine.

- Position support elements from (VAS 6131/10) at left on engine/transmission as shown in illustration.

- Position support elements from (VAS 6131/10) at right on engine/transmission as shown in illustration.

- Twist spindles of attachments upward far enough until all support pins make contact at support points.

- Tighten base plates for support elements to 20 Nm on scissor lift platform (VAS 6131).

Place a cloth under separation point to catch escaping coolant.

- Disconnect coolant hoses - arrows - from the left coolant pipes.

- Remove bolts - 1 -.

- Pull oil dipstick guide tube upward and off - arrow -.

- Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connectors - 1 to 8 -.

To disconnect electrical connectors - 3 - and - 6 -, unclip bracket for connectors from air filter housing and turn over (shown in close-up).

- Remove bolts - arrows - and pivot the bracket for left exhaust manifolds with catalytic converters downward.

- Remove nuts - 1 to 4 - and both left exhaust manifolds with catalytic converters.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector at left on transmission, by pivoting the twist lock counterclockwise - arrow -.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - arrow - at Sensor for transmission RPM (G182).

- Remove both bolts - 1 - and - 2 - for upper right coolant pipe.

Ignore - arrows -.

Coolant pipe remains in installed position.

- Disconnect coolant hoses - arrows -.

- Remove bolts - 1 -.

- Disconnect coolant connections at engine oil cooler.

- Remove bolts - arrows - and pivot the bracket for right exhaust manifolds with catalytic converters downward.

- Remove nuts - 1 to 4 - and both right exhaust manifolds with catalytic converters.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - arrow - at right engine mount.

- Remove bolts - 1 to 6 -.

- Remove engine support with engine mount.

- Remove Ground (GND) cable - 4 - on starter.

- Disconnect electrical wires - 2 - and - 3 - on starter.

- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 5 - and starter.

- Remove 6 bolts - arrows - of torque converter in the opening of the removed starter (turn crankshaft 1/3 rotation in each case).

To loosen the torque converter bolts counterhold main bolt of crankshaft.

- Remove engine/transmission connecting bolts.

- Loosen side clamping screws - 1 - on scissor lift platform (VAS 6131) and pull rear platform top with transmission toward rear - arrow -, simultaneously push torque converter through opening of drive plate while doing this.

After removing the engine from the scissor lift table (VAS 6131), do not set it down on the oil pan.

For performing work, lift engine using Shop Crane (VAS 6100) and secure to Engine and Transmission Holder (VAS 6095) => [ Engine, Securing on Assembly Stand ] Engine, Securing to Assembly Stand.
