Subject:
Engine Starts Hard or Ignition Key Must Be Held in Crank Position for a Long Period of Time
Model(s):
A6 2005 --> 2006
A8L, A8 2004 --> 2006
Condition
Engine starts hard or ignition key must be held in crank position for a long time.
May be caused by the Access Start Control Module, -J518-, losing transmission selector lever position data if the battery has been disconnected or if Engine Control Module (ECM) -J623-, has been accessed using a scan tool and DTC interrogated.
Production
No change.
Service
When vehicle repairs are completed, i.e. battery reconnected or when the ECM is no longer accessed with a scan tool:
^ The Access Start Control Module -J518- must re-learn the transmission selector lever positions.
This is accomplished by learning the full range of travel of the selector lever as follows:
- Switch Ignition ON.
- Place foot on brake pedal.
- Move transmission selector lever from the park position to the sport position (S) and back to the park position.
- Switch ignition OFF
^ The ECM has now learned the selector lever positions.
