Service
ServiceChecking for correct knock sensor position.
On the affected vehicles it is possible that the knock sensors for cylinder bank 2 are interchanged on the cylinder block.
^ Open quick-release fasteners -1- and -2- and take off front section of noise insulation.
^ 1a - Knock sensor 3 -G198- (assigned to cylinders 7, 8, 9).
^ 1b - Electrical connector (brown) for knock sensor 3 - G198.
^ 2a - Knock sensor 4 -G199- (assigned to cylinders 10, 11, 12).
^ 2b - Electrical connector (black) for knock sensor 4 - G199.
^ Starting from the electrical connectors, trace back the wiring.
Note:
The sequence in which the connectors are clipped on is not important. The brown connector (1b) is normally located towards the front of the vehicle. If the positions of the connectors are reversed, it is likely that the knock sensors have also been interchanged.
^ Continue following the cable along the lower part of the engine block.
Note:
Brown stars = cable from connector 1b to knock sensor 1a; Black triangles = cable from connector 2b to knock sensor 2a.
Note:
You can identify the cables more easily by pulling them slightly.
^ Complete cable tracing at sensors.
^ If the knock sensors are fitted in the wrong positions they must be removed and installed correctly.
Installing knock sensors in correct positions.
^ Set up engine support bracket.
Note:
Do not lower the sub-frame; just set up the engine support bracket.
^ Remove bolt at bottom of coolant pipe (right-side).
^ Unplug electrical connector (2) at vehicle level sender (left and right).
^ Unscrew and remove bolts -4- (left and right) evenly.
^ Remove bolts 1, 2 and 3 for engine mountings (left and right) and detach engine cross member.
^ Loosen clamp and detach additional coolant pump from bracket.
^ Remove bolts for engine mounting (left-side).
^ Unscrew knock sensors 1a and 2a and exchange their positions.
^ Check once again that knock sensor 3 (G198) goes to the brown connector and knock sensor 4 (G199) goes to the black connector.
^ 1a = Knock sensor 3 (G198, assigned to cylinders 7, 8, 9).
^ 1b = Electrical connector (brown) for knock sensor 3 (G198).
^ 2a = Knock sensor 4 (G199, assigned to cylinders 10, 11, 12).
^ 2b = Electrical connector (black) for knock sensor 4 (G199).
Installation is carried out in the reverse order with the following additions:
^ Use engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- to install engine cross member.
^ Use new hexagon bolts (item 3), Part No. N 910 013 01.
