Battery Interrupt Igniter
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051B)
CAUTION!
Battery Interrupt Igniters (-N253) are pyrotechnic components. The same safety measures apply as with airbags. Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
• If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) lights up after a vehicle accident, check whether crash data is stored using. If this is the case, check whether the malfunction 001 resistance too high for Battery Interrupt Igniter (-N253) is entered in DTC memory. If this should be the case, Battery Interrupt Igniter (-N253) must be replaced.
Removing
- Clamp off ground wire at battery with ignition switched off.
- Remove left luggage compartment side trim.
- Loosen quick-release screws - 1 - and - 3 - and open flap - 2 - of main fuse box in luggage compartment - arrow -.
- Remove nuts - 1 - and - 3 - from B+ wires.
- Remove Battery Interrupt Igniter (N253) - 2 - from retainer.
CAUTION!
Before disconnecting electrical connection, technician must discharge electrostatic energy. To do this, briefly touch door lock, for example.
- Disconnect electrical connector - 4 -.
- To do so, release connector lock - 2 - using a screwdriver until it stops - arrow -, this disengages the electrical harness connector - 1 - and it can be disconnected.

Installing
CAUTION!
Battery Interrupt Igniters (-N253) are pyrotechnic components. The same safety measures apply as with airbags. Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
- When connecting electrical connector, ensure it engages securely and locking mechanism is OK.
- Follow the specified tightening specifications.
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION!
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect battery.
- Follow measures after connecting battery.
- To complete, check DTC memory for airbag control module using and perform the required work steps if necessary.
