Seal For Left Drive Flange, Replacing



Seal for left drive flange (vehicles with 4-cylinder engine), replacing, 02M/02Y, 5 & 6 Speed M/T, AWD





Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Ball joint puller 3287 A
^ Thrust piece 3339
^ Old oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782

Work procedure
^ Transmission installed

TT Coupe:





- Remove sound insulation on center mounting parts - 1 to 3 -.

TT Roadster:
- Loosen mounting parts in wheel housing at left and right.





- Remove bolts - arrows 1 to 3 -.

Note: Disregard - arrows A and B -.

All:





- Remove left sound insulation - arrows -.





- Remove nut - arrow - for coupling rod at left stabilizer.
- Remove nut at top of left ball joint.





- Position ball joint puller 3287 A, as depicted in illustration, and pull off ball joint.

Note: To protect ball joint thread, leave nut on a few turns.

- Turn steering toward right.
- Unbolt left drive axle from transmission flanged shaft.
- Bring left drive axle upward and secure with wire.
- Place old oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782 beneath transmission.
- Remove conical head bolt for left flanged shaft and secure against turning using drift.
- Pull out flanged shaft with compression spring.
- Carefully pry out seal using a lever.





- Drive in new sealing ring to stop using thrust piece 3339 without canting sealing ring.
- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease G52 128 A1.
- Press in flanged shaft against spring pressure and secure with conical head bolt.
- Bolt on left drive axle to transmission flange shaft.
- Install ball joint and coupling rod.
- Top off gear oil in manual transmission with bevel gear transfer case.
- Install sound insulation.
