Exhaust System, Aligning Free of Stress
Exhaust System, Aligning Stress-free
- The exhaust system must be aligned when cold.
- As a tool for aligning exhaust system, modify an M10 bolt according to the dimensions given.
- Dimension -x- = 4 mm
- Dimension -y- = 25 mm
NOTE: Two technicians are required to align the exhaust system.
- Loosen bolted connections on clamp.
- Insert modified bolt (aligning tool) through rear drilling (arrow) in tunnel cross-piece, with flat part of bolt facing toward mounting pin on exhaust system.
NOTE: With bolt inserted, exhaust system is pre-tensioned in the direction of travel.
Vehicles with front wheel drive
- Align catalytic converter horizontally - C- and make sure that gaps -A- and -B- between catalytic converter and tunnel are equal.
Vehicles with all wheel drive
- Align catalytic converter horizontally -4- and make sure that gaps -3- between catalytic converter and heat shield in tunnel -2- are equal.
All vehicles
- Align front and rear mufflers horizontally.
Mounting pin on exhaust pipe must be parallel to tunnel cross-piece (dimension -x- must be same on left and right).
Aligning tailpipe in bumper cut-out
- Align rear muffler so that gaps -a- and -b- between muffler and bumper cut-out are equal. To do this, it may be necessary to loosen rear muffler mounting.
NOTE: On vehicles where the exhaust has been cut through between the front and rear mufflers, it may be necessary to loosen the clamp in order to achieve proper alignment.
- Install sleeve clamps so that screws are at right and screw ends do not project out over lower edge.
- Position each clamp at a distance of about 5 mm from notched markings. Arrange horizontally, then tighten evenly to 40 Nm.
