Affected Vehicles

91 Radio, entering and retrieving anti-theft (SAFE) code

Condition

The anti-theft code needs to be entered into the radio to enable functionality.

Technical Background

The radio requires the anti-theft code to be entered in the following scenarios:

- New vehicle delivery.

- New (replacement) radio installed into a vehicle or radio is installed into a different vehicle.

- No power at the radio - battery or radio was disconnected or fuse was pulled.

- Radio is electronically locked (SAFE appears in display) after the incorrect code has been entered twice.

Production Solution

Not applicable.

Service

At new vehicle delivery

- At PDI the anti-theft code and AUZ serial number sticker is delivered in the prep package that is laid in the footwell or trunk of the vehicle. This sticker should be affixed to the PDI form and entered into the radio as described in the procedure below.

- If the anti-theft code cannot be found, follow the Anti-theft code retrieval procedure listed below.

Anti-theft code retrieval

Tip:

The radio anti-theft code can only be retrieved through the VAS diagnostic tester, not through ElsaWeb. An active online connection and valid GeKo ID are required.

Vehicles with Gateway: R8, A3, TT (2008 on)

- Retrieve the anti-theft code in the tester by selecting and completing the following test plan: GF >> 56 Radio/Navigation >> 56 - Anti-theft - coding inquiry.

- The AUZ number and VIN number will automatically be read out and the anti-theft code will be retrieved from the online servers. The anti-theft code must then be entered into the radio as described in the Entering the anti-theft code procedure below.

Vehicles without Gateway: TT (up to 2006), A4 (B7), A6 (up to 2004), allroad (up to 2005), A8 (up to 2003)

- In Guided Functions select the vehicle type then 56 - Radio >> Displaying measuring value blocks. Then read out and record VIN and Radio AUZ serial number (14 digits) from MVB 81.

- Retrieve the anti-theft code in the tester by selecting and completing the following test function in GF: 56 - Radio >> Radio code - inquiry and system test >> Radio code, checking.

- The AUZ number and VIN number must be entered into the tester and the anti-theft code will be retrieved from the online servers and must be entered into the radio as described in the Entering the anti-theft code procedure below.

Anti-theft code entry

Code 1000 is displayed in the radio by default. The digits can be changed by pressing the corresponding soft keys on the radio as seen in the image below. Shown above is code entry in the Symphony II+, the procedure for other radio models will differ.

1. Press Softkey 1 repeatedly until the correct value is seen in the 1st position (X _ _ _).

2. Press Softkey 2 repeatedly until the correct value is seen in the 2nd position (_ X _ _).

3. Repeat above step using Softkeys 3 and 4 until the correct anti-theft code is seen on the display.

4. Verify the correct code is displayed then press the ENTER Softkey to accept the coding.

If the correct anti-theft code has been entered the display will change to an FM frequency and the radio can be used. If the incorrect code is entered SAFE is briefly seen in the display changing to 1000 again and one additional attempt to enter the correct code is possible.

Unlocking a locked radio (SAFE on the display)

The radio becomes electronically locked after two incorrect code entries. To unlock the radio so that the correct anti-theft code can be entered the radio must remain powered on for a specified time. Use the following procedure to do this.

1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle.

2. Turn the ignition and radio on for approximately one hour.

After remaining on for one hour the radio display will change and the anti-theft code can again be entered. Refer to the procedure Entering the anti-theft code above to complete the code entry.
