Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 87 number 08-08 dated December 5, 2008 for reasons listed below.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

CONDITION

Air conditioning doesn't cool. Only 2006 and 2007 A3 models equipped with Zexel air conditioning compressors with the part number IKO 820 803N are affected.

This compressor type can be identified by the pulley shown in Figure 1.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

There may be one of two possible problems with Zexel air conditioning compressors:

1. Breakage:

^ The limiter (overload protection in the event of compressor seizure) is broken, or

^ The shaft to hub connection between pulley and compressor shaft is broken.

2. Obstruction: A/C compressor control valve N280 in the air conditioning compressor is obstructed by metal debris, and the compressor generates no pressure.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Not applicable.

SERVICE

1. With the engine running and air conditioning switched on, the center bolt (Figure 1, Point 2) doesn't rotate with the pulley. As a result, the compressor is not driven, and pressure is not generated when the air conditioning is switched on.

How to tell if the compressor shaft has seized: If the center bolt (Figure 1, Point 2) can be loosened with a wrench (with removed or relaxed ribbed belt), the compressor shaft has seized. The compressor must be replaced.

2. Diagnose the compressor regulator valve N280 according to ElsaWeb >> Heating and Air Conditioning >> Heating and Air Conditioning >> 87 Air Conditioner> >A/C refrigerant system components, servicing >> A/C Compressor Regulator Valve N280 activation and function, checking. If N280 is found to be faulty, the compressor must be replaced as A/C compressor control valve N280 cannot be replaced separately.

3. In both cases, replace Zexel air conditioning compressors with the Denso compressor IK0 820 803P. Carefully inspect system for the presence of any metal debris. Follow procedure for compressor replacement in Elsa Web Refrigerant R 134a-servicing >> 87 Air Conditione >> Components, replacing.

4. In both cases, always flush the refrigerant circuit according to the procedure in Elsa Web - see Repair Manual Refrigerant R 134a -Servicing. Make certain that the correct amount of refrigerant oil is in the system. Replacement compressors come with a full system oil charge. See Elsa Web >> Heating and Air Conditioning >> Refrigerant R 134a-Servicing >> 87 Air Conditioner> > Refrigerant R134a/refrigerant oil capacities and approved refrigerant oils >> Approved refrigerant oils and refrigerant oil capacities.

5. Finally, check the cooling performance of the air conditioning according to the air conditioning repair manual in Elsa Web.
