A/C - System Not Cooling

87 Air conditioning does not cool

87 10 10

2012635/3

October 15, 2010

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 87 number 08-07 dated December 5, 2008 for reasons listed below.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

CONDITION

Air conditioning does not cool. Only 2006 and 2007 A3 models equipped with Sanden air conditioning compressors with the part number 1K0 820 803S are affected.

This compressor type can be identified by the pulley.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

A/C compressor control valve N280 in the air conditioning compressor inoperative. The compressor generates no pressure.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Improved parts in production.

SERVICE

1. If pulley (Figure 1) is fitted, drain the refrigerant circuit and check the quantity.

2. Fill up the circuit correctly with R 134a according to the repair manual.

3. When the engine is running, switch the air conditioning to auto and set both sides to LO.

4. In address word 08-Air Conditioning/Heater Electronics, measuring value block 1, display field 1 the current must be at least 600 mA.

If no current can be read (see A3 air conditioning repair manual), read measuring value block 2 and assess the compressor cut-off conditions.

5. If the current is at least 600 mA, then the next step is to determine if this same current value is present at the connector for the air conditioning compressor regulator valve N280. To do this, make a test adapter cable for N280 as described in ElsaWeb and connect between the plug on the wiring loom and the plug on regulator valve N280. The control current can then be measured assuming the wiring and connectors from the climate control panel to the control valve of the air conditioning compressor is intact.

6. If the measured current at the N280 connector is verified to be correct (it is the same as in measuring value block 1 field 1) and there is no pressure increase in the high pressure circuit (see measuring value block 1 field 4) and no pressure reduction in the low pressure circuit (can be read on the connected A/C service station), then replace the air conditioning compressor.

7. Use the original packaging for returning the damaged part. Make sure that the plug for regulator valve N280 (Figure 2) is not damaged.
