Shift Mechanism

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Socket and key (T40031)

Removing

- Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

- Remove the Air Conditioning (A/C) control.

- Remove the ashtray in the center console.

- Release all 4 clips - arrows - and pull the cover - 1 - with guide upwards to remove.





- Disconnect the connector from the side of the guide plate.

- Disconnect the electrical harness connector on the shift lock solenoid (N110).

- Raise the retaining tab - A - and remove the locking lever in direction of - arrow -.





- Place the selector lever in the "D" position.

- Loosen the rear clamping screw on the selector lever cable through the hole in the shift mechanism approximately one turn using the socket and key (T40031).





Loosen the clamping screw only approximately 1 turn. Do not remove.

The clamping screw is only accessible in selector lever position " D".

Selector lever must remain in the "D" position while the clamping screw is loose.

- Loosen the quick release screws - 2 - and - 3 - and remove the rear noise insulation.





- Remove the tunnel braces.





The flex joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 degrees, otherwise it may be damaged.





- Disconnect the exhaust system at the double clamps - arrows -.

- Remove the heat shield under the shift mechanism.

For vehicles with noise insulation - A - under the shift mechanism





- Remove the lock washers - arrows -.

Always replace the lock washers

- Remove the sound insulation - A - and slide forward.

Continuation for All

- Remove the selector lever cable retaining clip - 1 -.





- Remove the selector lever cable - 2 - from the shift mechanism.

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

- Remove nuts - arrows -.





A second technician is required when detaching the shift mechanism from below the vehicle.

- Press the holder clips - 1 - and - 2 - inward, at the same time pushing the shift mechanism downward.

Installing

Installation is in the reverse order of removal, note the following:

- Install the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable ] Selector Lever Cable.

- Install the locking cable. Refer to => [ Locking Lever ] Locking Lever.

- Adjust the locking cable. Refer to => [ Locking Cable Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install the exhaust system and align it free of tension.

- Check the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism Checking ] Shift Mechanism Checking.
