Procedures



Hub carrier (front wheel drive), servicing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Thrust plate VW 402
^ Press tool VW 411
^ Press tool VW 412
^ Tube 60 mm dia. VW 415.
^ Arbor VW 434
^ Thrust piece sleeve VW 792
^ Assembly tool 3301/4





1 - Hub carrier
^ Seal - arrow - must not rub against wheel bearing unit
^ Do not remove seal

2 - Splash plate

3 - Wheel bearing unit
^ Does not always have to be replaced.
^ If the wheel bearing unit can be pulled from hub carrier by hand, wheel bearing unit is OK and can be re-installed.
^ If it is not possible to pull wheel bearing off by hand, the wheel bearing unit must be replaced.
^ Replace only as a complete assembly.

4 - Collared bolt
^ Always replace

5 - Torx bolt

6 - Rubber bushing
^ Removing
^ Installing





Removing rubber bushing
- Apply continuous pressure when removing rubber bushing.

Note:
^ Hold hub carrier/wheel bearing housing while pressing out.





Installing rubber bushing
- Clean seat inside hub carrier/wheel bearing housing
- Coat entire surface of rubber bushing and seat inside hub carrier/wheel bearing housing with assembly lubricant G 294 421 A1 (diluted in a ratio of 1: 100 with water).
- Install rubber bushing - A - so that the wider collar faces downward - arrow -.





- Press rubber bushing into hub carrier/wheel bearing housing by applying continuous pressure until the collar of the bushing contacts assembly tool VW 792 and is compressed (pressure rises noticeably).

Note:
^ If the pressing-in process is interrupted, the rubber swells and the bushing cannot be pressed in without being damaged.
^ Hold hub carrier/wheel bearing housing while pressing in bushing.





- Press bushing back until dimension a = 10 ± 0.8 mm is obtained.
