Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Adjustments

Input Shaft, Adjusting

Determine the ball bearing circlip on the input shaft.

It is necessary to adjust the input shaft again when

Transmission housing

or the

Input Shaft

are replaced.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

M8 and M10 Bolt (3114/2)

Seal Driver-Front Wheel Bearing (30 - 100)

Bushing Puller (T10246)

Digital Depth Gauge, for example, (VAS 6087)

Determine the circlip for the input shaft behind the ball bearing.

- Install an available circlip - arrow - into the rear groove in the input shaft.

- Then slide ball bearing onto input shaft.

Installation position:

Closed side of cage for balls points toward transmission housing.

- Install the ball bearing:

First install the M8 and M10 Replacement Stud ( 3114/2) into the threaded hole for the ball stud.

Slide thrust pad - A - of Press Device (T10246) onto input shaft.

Now place Press Device behind clutch plate splines. Pre-tension bolts - B -. The bolts bear against the indentations in thrust piece - A -.

Press in ball bearing onto seat by alternately tightening bolts (1/2 turn at a time) until stop is reached.

- Then install plate spring - 1 -.

Installation position:

Convex side faces guide sleeve - 2 -.

- Place a heat-shrinkable tube on the input shaft spline.

- Tighten the guide sleeve - 2 - with the bolts - 3 - to the transmission housing.

- Rotate the transmission housing with the bearing housing bolting surface facing upward.

Clean all Sealing Paste off the separating surface.

- Install the thrust washer - 1 - for the 4th/5th gear wheels on the input shaft.

- Place a Digital Depth Gauge, for example, (VAS 6087) on the thrust washer and measure the housing separating surface. The measuring point on the housing separating surface must be as close as possible to the input shaft.

Lift the input shaft, for example, with the Bracket (30-211A) or by a second technician, until the there is not play in the ball bearing.

Specified value for dimension "a": 164.14 mm

If the measured value is greater than the specified value, then exchange the installed circlip for a thinner one.

If the measured value is smaller than the specified value, then exchange the installed circlip for a thicker one.

The circlip must be as close as possible to the specified value 164.11 mm.

The following circlips are available:

- Determine circlip according to table.

Check dimension "a" again.

The calculated circlip is installed.

When the correct circlip has been chosen, then dimension "a " must be 164.14 mm +/-0.04 mm.

Determine the circlip for the input shaft in front of the ball bearing.

- Drive rear circlip (as calculated) and ball bearing onto input shaft using Press Tube (30 - 100).

- Determine the thickest circlip that can just still be installed.

- Determine circlip according to table. Part numbers.
