ATF, changing or filling after repairs - 01J, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required





^ Triple square socket driver 3357





^ ATF filler system F/CVT transmission VAS 5162
^ Old oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782
^ Safety glasses

Work procedure
^ Move vehicle onto a lifting platform or over a work pit so that it stands absolutely horizontal.

CAUTION!
Do not allow engine to run without filling ATF and do not tow the vehicle.


Note:
^ Refer to Rules of cleanliness for working on automatic transmissions.
^ Refer to General repair notes.
^ Observe disposal regulations!
^ Always blow compressed air through ATF cooler and ATF lines (max. 10 mbar) and replace auxiliary ATF filter before installing a replacement transmission.

- Fill ATF filler system F/CVT transmission VAS 5162 with ATF for CVT transmissions.

CAUTION!
The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF oils!






- Secure filled reservoir of ATF filler system F/CVT transmission VAS 5162 as high as possible on the vehicle.

Note:
^ The shut-off valve on the ATF filler system F/CVT transmission VAS 5162 must be closed.





- Loosen quick-release screws -2- and -3- and remove rear noise insulation.
- Place old oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782 beneath transmission.

CAUTION!
Wear eye protection.






- Remove ATF drain plug -A- using triple square socket driver 3357 and drain ATF.
- Tighten ATF drain plug again.
^ Tightening torque: 24 Nm.
- Remove ATF check plug -B-.
- Thread connection on shut-off valve of ATF filler system F/CVT transmission VAS 5162 into opening of ATF check plug -B-.





- Rotate shut-off valve in direction of filler hose - lower arrow -. ATF flows into transmission.
- Fill at least 4.5 to liters ATF into transmission.
- Selector lever in "P", start engine and let it run at idle.

For vehicles as of model year 2005:
^ Selector lever in position "P"
- Let engine run at high speed at a minimum of 2500 RPM by depressing accelerator pedal.

CAUTION!
It is necessary to run engine at high speed so that ATF pump is ventilated after performing repairs on the transmission.


All model years:
- Check ATF level and top off.

Note:
^ Observe all notes and test requirements for "Checking ATF level and topping off".
