1 - Subframe

2 - Plastic insert

Part of purchased mounting assembly

3 - Washer

Always replace

4 - Combi-bolt

110 Nm plus an additional 90° turn

Always replace

Threads in body can be repaired according to DIN 8140 using wire thread inserts (Heli-Coil). Thread insert must be same length as thread in body.

5 - Washer

Front only

Corrugation face toward body

Installed only with a hydraulic mounting

Discontinued from calendar week 48.2000 with introduction of new hydraulic mounting.

Stub Axle Carrier





1 - Stub axle carrier

With FWD

2 - Wheel bearing unit

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Steel Wheel Bearing Housing, AWD ] Steel Wheel Bearing Housing, AWD

The wheel bearing and wheel hub are installed together in a housing.

This wheel bearing/hub unit is maintenance and adjustment free. Adjusting and servicing is not possible!

Does not need to be replaced

If wheel bearing unit can be removed from stub axle carrier by hand, wheel bearing unit is OK and can be reinstalled.

If it cannot be removed by hand, wheel bearing unit must be replaced.

Replace only as complete unit

3 - Collar bolt

Always replace

200 Nm plus an additional 180° turn

Tighten to 200 Nm, if vehicle is raised, only tighten with additional turn when vehicle is on floor

If vehicle is resting on floor, do not loosen more than 90°

4 - Dust cap

Always replace after removal

An appropriate seal can only be achieved with a new dust cap.

Only then is an optimum function and long service life guaranteed.

5 - Wheel speed sensor

Wire routing => [ Speed sensor wire routing on trapezoidal control
arm ]

6 - Socket head bolt

10 Nm

7 - Self-locking nut

Always replace

8 - Washer

9 - Shock Absorbers

On vehicles with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC II), empty and fill system, refer to => [ Dynamic Ride Control, Emptying and Filling ] Service and Repair

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Shock Absorber ] Shock Absorber

Note installed position => [ Shock absorber location ]

Pay attention to the different types of suspension; see vehicle data plate => [ Explanations of the production
control numbers (PR number) ] Application and ID.

Faulty shock absorbers must be vented and emptied before disposal, refer to => [ Rear Gas-Filled Strut, Venting ] Rear Gas-Filled Strut, Venting

Check removed shock absorber, refer to => [ Shock Absorbers, Removed, Checking ] Shock Absorbers, Removed, Checking

10 - Combi-bolt

36 Nm

11 - Combi-bolt

150 Nm plus an additional 90°

Always replace

Tighten bolts only in curb weight position

Speed sensor wire routing on trapezoidal control arm





1 Install with cylindrical shoulder, 10 Nm
2 Collar bolt, 10 Nm
3 Cable guide
To remove, remove collar bolt - 2 - and carefully slide cable guide off of bolts - 1 - - arrow A -.
To remove complete wiring, also unclip at subframe - arrow B -.

Shock absorber location





Longer collar on shock absorber - arrow A - must sit in centering seat on stub axle carrier/wheel bearing housing - arrow B -.
