Technical Background
In Audi vehicles manufactured within a limited period and equipped with Bluetooth and Navigation plus (RNS-E), it is possible that the internal memory of the Telephone control unit (R36) may be damaged when certain types of mobile phones are used. If this happens, it is not possible to use the hands-free phone feature. The Telephone control unit may not go into sleep mode after the ignition is turned off, draining the vehicle battery.
Production Solution
Telephone control unit (R36) with improved software version 0350.
Service
Checking software version
Using a VAS 505x diagnostic tool, check the software version of the Telephone control unit (R36) and replace the control unit only if the software version is lower than 0350.
If software level is 0350 or higher, no update is necessary. See Warranty table.
Replacing Telephone control unit
Replace the Telephone control unit (R36) using the test plan in Guided Functions on the VAS 505x diagnostic tool. Guided Functions >> 77 - Telephone (cellular phone preparation) >> R36 - Telephone Transceiver replacing.
For assistance with control unit removal and installation reference ElsaWeb >> Repair Manual, Electrical System >> Rep. Gr. 91 Radio, Telephone, Navigation, Trip computer, Telephone system - USA >> Telephone Transceiver -R36-, removing and installing.
Tip: When replacing the Telephone control unit (R36) ensure the Bluetooth antenna (R152) is removed and transferred to the new Telephone control unit. The antenna does not require replacement.
Testing Bluetooth feature
Once the new Telephone control unit has been installed and the test plan completed, verify the system is operating by pairing an approved Bluetooth phone to the car.
