60 Sliding Roof Reverses, Does Not Close Completely

Condition

When the sunroof panel is almost completely closed, it reverses direction and opens slightly.

Technical Background

New sunroof motors must be initialized at installation.

Production Solution

Not affected.

Service

I: Instructions for the Audi A4, A6 Sedan and Avant:

1. Remove the interior light. Leave the rotary switch connected. Set the rotary switch to position one or two (comfort or fully open positions). During opening of the sunroof panel, remove the power supply plug of the sunroof motor. Switch off the ignition and remove the key.

2. Turn the sunroof rotary switch to position zero (closed). Wait at least 30 seconds. Reconnect power supply plug to the motor and switch on ignition.

Note for new part: If this procedure is being performed after the replacement of a rotary switch and/or sunroof motor connect the rotary switch plug first before connecting the power supply plug to the sunroof motor. In the case of sunroof motor replacement perform sunroof motor "Zero" position (link guide) adjustment as specified in ElsaWeb before performing this initialization.

3. Turn the rotary switch quickly from "closed" to any open position and go back to "closed position." Wait until the sunroof panel is closed and the clicking of the relay can be heard from the sunroof motor.

4. Within the next 5 seconds, pull the rotary switch (pull the lug of the knob.) Hold the pulling function until the sunroof tilts, opens, and returns to the closed position. It may take 8-10 seconds for roof movement to commence.

5. After the programming switch off the ignition for at least 10 seconds. Check sunroof function.

NOTE: This initialization is performed without pinch protection active. Stay clear of the moving sunroof panel during the procedure.

The initialization and the programming run are now complete, and the sunroof can be operated normally.

II: Instruction for the Audi A8:

1. The sunroof cover should be in lifting or sliding position. Turn the knob to the closed position and release the pulling function immediately. Pull the switch constantly.

2. Release the switch from the pulling function after the sunroof drive clicks (at rear), and immediately pull again until a clattering noise comes from the deflector motor (at the front).

3. While the deflector motor is still clattering, release the switch and pull and hold again straight away (pulling function). After the clattering stops, the programming run starts with a delay of up to 15 seconds.

4. Hold the pulling switch till the sunroof has moved to all the relevant positions (sliding position fully open and closed, lifting position fully open and closed) and the resistance values are saved.

5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 three times.

6. Check the function.

Tip Perform these steps when the battery is fully charged or when the engine is running.

The initialization and the programming run are now complete, and the sunroof can operated normally.
